Blake's 7 moves up a notch with the excellent second series which contains some superb and very dramatic episodes. The second half of the season contains a continuing theme which is the search for Star One abd the characters continue to develop, with Blake becoming more obsessive and driven, and Avon starting to play a more prominent role. Brain Croucher takes over the role of baddy Travis and is unfortunately the weak link in this series, being not a patch on Stephen Greif's menacing portrayal, but Jacqueline Pearce has much more to do as ice queen Servalan and is a joy to watch. The stand out episodes here are the drug-themed Shadow, Pressure Point in which a key character is killed, Trial and the season finale Star One, which is possibly ... Read More:

This film, like the dreamworld it portrays, is a langorous timeless piece which evokes, particularly for those who remember it the first time round, that sense of wonder, essentially an aspect of the Sixties, in a world where absolutely anything is possible. A perfect synthesis of ideas, images and music, this film transcends both its origins and its intended interpretation as a satire on the stifling idiosyncrasies of Victorian society to become a unique vision of a world-time-place viewed within Jonathan Miller's imagination and by extension transferred to the mind of the viewer.

The soundtrack alone, all droning summer insects, lapping seashores, approaching marching bands (the sound phasing in and out on the breeze), recreates a mood of ... Read More:

Although ostensibly a spin-off from Granada's successful 1976/77 crime thriller "The XYY Man" (which has also mysteriously lain locked away in the vaults until recently), "Strangers" was a belated attempt by northern broadcaster Granada to muscle in on the cop show genre...

Contemporary series such as "The Sweeney", "The New Avengers" and "The Professionals" found favour with viewers through their pacey direction and action. Yet this first season of "Strangers" is a surprisingly laid-back affair. It clearly lacked the budget, production values and directorial panache of these other shows. So what has it got going for it?...

Essentially these early stories are character-driven. The interaction - in turns pithy and light-hearted - between ... Read More:

The cast interpret the script in a way that is easy to understand, so this DVD is ideal if you're studying the play. A good companion to the Arden Shakespeare text.

I saw this on BBC television and it is not in the least bit frightening. In fact, the wires can be seen attached to the bedclothes which are supposed to be rising by themselves.

This wonderful boxed set of the charity comedy concerts from 1976 through to 1991 contains some of the best live comedy/satire ever produced. Everybody will have their favourites, but two or three standout for me.

The four Yorkshire sketch is a masterpiece. Somehow I had never heard the Python original prior to seeing this version. So this remains my favourite. "Our Dad used to slice us in two with bread knife"... etc etc.
However best of all is Peter Cook. We are so lucky that he performed at these shows and in particular that his marvellous skit on the Judges summing up of the Jeremy Thorpe (the then leader of the Liberal Party) related trial is captured on film as well as in sound - "I would like to pay a personal tribute to Mr Thropes husband Miriam...." ... Mozart's last opera is a seria, whose secco recitative (sung speech accompanied by forte piano) was done by his student Franz Sussmayr instead of the composer... So Zurich Opera uses that as an excuse to make an Italian Singspiel out of it.

All secco recit are replaced with Italian dialog. Might have worked had the cast been able to speak the language convincingly, but they don't. Even the lone native speaker Eva Mei sounds unnatural... Worst off is the magnificent Vesselina Kasarova, whose speaking voice is a tenth the size and masculinity of her singing voice. So she darkens it, but relapses at times in more dramatic passages... and that's just so darn weird.

Staging is minimalistic and updated to look like a very dark 1930's Italy with Tito looking like ... Read More:
