Yes, it is a pity that the movie is not presented in its intended theatrical aspect ratio 1.85. But to make it clear it is not presented in "butchered 1.33 to fit conventional TV screens" or a "TV-friendly crop of the original wide-screen movie" either. The movie is presented in its original open matte format, which means it was shot in conventional 1.33 to fit TV screens. For theatrical release the picture was then cropped at the top and the bottom, a common practice since the Fifties. So the picture is nothing missing here as the other reviewers suggest. Instead, it shows more information at the top and the bottom than the theatrical release. Just for the record.

This long overdue DVD release is simply perfection. Yes, there is a bit of nudity and some of the camera angles and staging could have been more inspired but the restored picture looks as if it could have been filmed last week and the sound quality is perfect. To hear it in 5.1 is breathtaking, it is almost better then viewing it live. This is the best version of Don Giovanni on the market and one of the greatest opera films ever made.

Sadly, as other reviewers have observed there was a fault on disc 2 which made me reluctantly return my copy in March. However, having just re-purchased it, I am delighted to see that this fault has now been fixed and you can enjoy the whole film as the director intended.

I first heard about this cult film about five years ago but couldn't track it down for love nor money. After several years wait it was finally released on DVD and I settled down with a glass of red wine and a bag of kettle chips to see if it was worth the wait. Overall I'd say yes; Harold Pinter's screenplay depicts a confusing of traditional class roles and is given a dark undercurrent by Dirk Bogarde's creepily subservient manservant, who gradually erodes Edward Fox's ideas of class and status until the latter is a gibbering wreck and the former is in complete control. The role of Hugo Barrett exemplifies Bogarde's later roles where he got out of his comfort zone and began to play edgy as well as morally and sexually ambiguous characters to great ... Read More:

British film from 1967 that focuses on the `dilemmas' of two Oxford Professors (Dirk Bogarde & Stanley Baker) who become enamoured with one of their students (Jacqueline Sassard).

Shamefully soulless and superficial, it really is nothing more than rich boys worrying about who to have an affair with next. Melodramatic is an understatement.

The acting is fine from Bogarde & Baker, Sassard is a bore. Michael York has a few minor scenes. It's all quite dull but you can tell Pinter's self aware script thinks a lot of itself.

I decided to buy this collection, in spite of the other reviews that described its poor video quality, so I have no right to complain. However, I wanted to add some specifics that the other reviewers did not mention. Far from being re-mastered, all four titles appear to have been taken from pre-existing transfers to analog tape. 'Far From the Madding Crowd' has the same scratches on it as on the VHS tape that I already owned. On top of this, these poor analog masters seem to have been digitally encoded in someone's garage using a cheap capture device and an old PC that someone found on a dump. The non-widescreen 'The Go-Between' seems to be from the same source as the DVD given away free by the Telegraph a while ago. The black-and-white titles have ... Read More:

This play is often performed on stage. Ultimately, it was written as a play and translated from another language, enroute. This film therefore is severely lacking in something. Maybe it is that there is no ending. Maybe it is because Jane Fonda is the lead character. But certainly this film is a complete disaster. The play isn't too hot either! Avoid at all costs. Ninety-minutes of sheer trash.

This late 60s psycho-thriller is miles ahead of it's modern competitors. It is the chilling tale of a bereaved mother (Taylor) and a younger woman (Farrow) in the same situation. They meet on a bus and each realise a strong resemblance to their deceased loved ones. However, it is not long before the girl's meddlesome aunts and perverted stepfather (Mitchum) start to interfere. This is the perfect film for those who enjoy tense thrillers but due to the controversial factor, may not suit everybody.
