What a great series Silent Witness is and it is still going strong. In fact I watched an episode of the new series last night. This 2 disk dvd contains the first series.
The first story Buried Lies is a strong start and introduces us to Dr Sam Ryan played by Amanda Burton. The plot concerns the death of a young girl who is thought to have fallen from a swing and drowned, Sam has other ideas.
Next up is Long Days, Short Night. This was the first episode I ever watched and features Colin Salmon (Tomorrow Never Dies)as a man suspected of a ritual killing.
Ken Stott stars in the next episode Darkness Visible. Sam investigates a custody death in a police cell. Could there be a cover up ?
The final story Sins Of The Fathers ... Read More:

This film should be in everyone's collection, if only because it showcases two of the best young actresses on the circuit; Jemima Rooper and the always outstanding Sarah Jane Potts. I first caught Sarah Jane playing Warren Clarke's 'punk' daughter in 'The Locksmith'. Following that she turned up opposite Ian Richardson in a version of 'The Canterbury Ghost'. These two roles couldn't be more different, yet they were both carried off very convincingly. Anyone who has seen Ms Rooper in the remake of 'The Railway Children' and 'Hex' will not need my recommendation.

That said, the film doesn't rely on either of them, such is the quality of the cast and direction. It's funny and moving in equal proportion and manages to leave you feeling ... Read More:

This BBC production is simply superb. David Jason in the lead role is perfect as the upright and honourable soldier who leads his boys into an unimagined hell. The score on this drama is superb and truly heart-breaking. It will leave scenes in your mind not easily forgotten.

This latest version of Evelyn Waugh's "Brideshead Revisited" is a middling success: neither a triumph nor a failure. More importantly it does not diminish the grandeur and mighty ghost of the 1980's Masterpiece Theater production with Jeremy Irons as Charles Ryder and Anthony Andrews as Sebastian though Matthew Goode (as Ryder) and Ben Whishaw (as Sebastian) do their best, through good and cogent performances, to top their predecessors. And while Irons and Andrews operated in a production that ran many hours and therefore had the luxury of time to define their characters, Goode and Whishaw have only 2+ hours to focus and grab our attention.
Director Julian Jarrold and writers Andrew Davies and Jeremy Brock do a more than competent job of reshaping ... Read More:

I first watched this when it aired in 1994. It was the first episode of Cracker I watched and I thought it was fantastic. I was only 20. Add the best part of 15 years and I've finally watched it again... So now what do I make of it?

I'm surprised I didn't come back to this sooner. Coltrane is perfect as Fitz. Many have tried to play the angry, hard-drinking detective but nobody comes within a country mile of this acid-tongued colossus. He is hilarious at times, genius, tragic and brutal at others. Add to that, the utterly convincing performance of Robert Carlyle as psychotic skin headed killer, Albie Kinsella; the beautiful and poignant writing of Jimmy McGovern; and a rock-solid supporting cast (including a great Christopher Eccleston, Ricky ... I felt this film stood alone, it did not matter that it was not totally authentic,( I am a fan of Austen and an English graduate but who cares it is escapism, the real JA was ugly!!) the story was beautifully portrayed and the actors were very believable, I have lost count how many times I have seen it . I adore Anne Hathaway and was ready to elope with James Mcavoy myself!!!

Technical flaws aside owing to the very grainy resolution, this is Great Expectations as it ought to be... arresting and deeply evocative. This is very, very good. Having admired David Lean's rather compressed version of Dickens' superb novel for many years and having endured the complete annihilation of the said novel in the abhorrent farrago starring Gwyneth Paltrow and Ethan Hawke, it is an absolute joy to witness the sheer quality of realisation in this production. It vastly outclasses the other productions on every level although the Lean has great nostalgic charm and appeal. Relatively faithful to the novel, this is profoundly engaging. The acting is superb.Charlotte Rampling inhabits the character of Miss Havisham at a stellar level, evoking a sympathetic ... Read More:

This is one of my favourite episodes of Cracker but also the one that creeps me out the most!

Cracker becomes involved in the case of a missing girl, Joanne, who was very involved with a local religious sect and was also having an affair with the Minister (a particularly unsavoury character!)

The minister's wife, Virginia has found out about the affair and possible pregnancy and because the Minister suddenly decides the repent, there is the question of what to do with Joanne!

Add in involvement from the Minister's brother and his wife, arson at a factory and some pretty intricate body art and you've got the usual high standard of drama you'd expect.

As usual Fitz's life is a mess, and this time Judith might ... Read More:
