I watched about 20 minutes of this film and then decided to go to my kitchen and chaw out my eyes with a rusty fork which proved a lot more entertaining than the movie!!

A bold and colourful film about the audacious and uncompromising Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, from her tram accident at 18, which left her with excruciating chronic pain, through her many affairs with both men and women, including Leon Troksy, and her tumultuous but enduring marriage to Mexican muralist, Diego Riviera.

Her life was full of circumstance and the pain and tragedies that she endured are imbued in her vibrant paintings.

Here, director Julie Taymore shows she is an extremely talented and accomplished director, displaying her artistic vision and skill, making fantastic use of colour, art and music.

Visually resplendent, this is an alluring film.

I thought that the set and direction were stunning. The casting was excellent too, and I have to disagree with another reviewer regarding Jessica Lange's performance, which was credible if not excellent. An accessable adaptation and underrated.

The first 10 minutes or so I was convinced Across The Universe was mediocre at best. But then it found its footing and became something unique and, ultimately, very watchable. This is an absolute treat for Beetles fans and, I suspect, not so thrilling for those who aren't fond of the band. Still, on an artistic level I'd like to think most viewers could find something to appreciate.

A film like this is best viewed as a journey - don't try anticipating what comes next, just take it on faith that it'll lead you somewhere great... and it does.

This is a film based on an unnerving but seductive production of Stravinsky's Neoclassical opera/oratorio Oedipus Rex, given only twice to launch the Seito Kinen Festival in 1992. The production confronts us with brilliantly conceived and staged image upon image, with the huge chorus (80 singers and 20 dancers) deployed around the vast set of sculpted wooden slats over a huge pool of water. The chorus - absolutely central to this `opera' - are in mud make-up and torn clothes emphasising the diseased decay of Thebes, at times presenting them like the `living dead' or statues come to life. Placed in blocks they are - as Stravinsky wanted - `monumentalised' and eerie.

This is even more the case with the soloists. Stravinsky had wanted ... Read More:

DVD : Titus [2000] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
Having studied Shakespeare for as long as I remember, and having read through the entire corpus, give or take one or two of the comedies, I find it hard to understand why so many people unquestioningly judge this to be the worst of Shakespeare's plays. The rhetoric is fascinating - Tamora's manipulation of natural imagery for her own lustful purposes in Act II.iii, sits alongside Titus' ethereal joy in the forest as a life-giving force in one of the most subtle and satisfying inversions in drama. The disintegration of Roman civilisation is allied to the descent of one man into madness with devastating effect. The rape of Lavinia is painfully - but hopefully - depicted. All this in the original. This stunning adaptation is one of the finest that I have seen. ... Read More:
