It seems to fall to me to rain on the parade of admiring reviews here. Yes, the film is beautifully filmed, especially at Lyme Regis, which I know quite well. The main street (and the Cobb, a kind of mole jutting out into the sea) was totally turned back in time and brilliantly. Yes, the acting is excellent, though I do not find Iron's lugubrious bourgeois almost-gentleman in Angst act too enthralling (as seen elsewhere, e.g. in Brideshead Revisited).

In the end, I just did not find this story of parallel 19th and 20th Century love stories (both led by Irons and Streep) very interesting; neither to me was the 19th Century one very plausible, whereas the 20th Century affair was simply banal.

Worth seeing once, though.

I've seen this film so may times, and it's still as amazing as the first time.

The film is about the life of Patsy Cline from the time that she Charlie Dick. Jessica Lange plays her fabulously.

This film is for any Patsy Cline fan out there.

DVD : Saturday Night and Sunday Morning [1960] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
A Brilliant film and about as British as they come. Filmed entirely on location in the midlands (Nottingham) at the beginning of the 1960s it documents the life of Arthur Seaton (Finney) and the pure drudgery of the working week where all there is to live for is the weekends; a time to get down the pub and binge drink and, at every opportunity, get to bed his friend's middle aged wife, Brenda. Powerful performances by all the cast, especially Finney who plays the part of Arthur with incredible vitality. It demonstrates how even 40 years ago there were individuals who were unashamedly amoral and against authority of any kind. This film is a classic and a piece of social history.

these songs sound terrific remixed! Who better to do the remixing then Owen Bradley, who produced the original tracks. There are those who bemoan that the songs have been remixed, but the original versions are available in pristine form elsewhere. These are slight variations on the originals, and the result is a freshening up of the terrific performances. If you love Patsy Cline's music, you'll love this recording!
