A sequel of sorts to "The Longest Day," (same director, some of the same actors like Fonda playing different characters), this is one of the best restorations of a film I've seen in recent years. The picture and sound have been digitally remastered and 17 minutes of previously-unseen footage has been added (you even get a hilarious 1960s intermission card onscreen halfway through, how's that for restoring everything!). The film looks and sounds brand new again and there are new things to enjoy.

Having said that, the film itself doesn't do justice to the real Battle of the Bulge or Ardennes Offensive as it is also called. The real battle was fought in blizzard conditions, there are scenes in this film that look like summertime with not a flake ... Read More:

This may not be the only film journalling the D-day landings at Normandy and the events leading up to them, but it is by far the best. Shot in black and white for effect, all aspects of the operation are covered, from the placement of dummy units, designed to deceive the germans into believing Calais was the target, to the tension leading up to the big day, made worse by inclement weather conditions.
What makes this film special is that it doesn't just tell one side of the story, it alternates all the way through, mostly focusing on the allied actions while giving a reasonable account of what the germans were doing.
This adds to the excitement when the landings take place, both air and seaborne. Historically accurate, with adequate free licence to keep ... Read More:

Still a classic after all these years. Cornelius Ryan wrote two great books about single actions - The Longest Day and A bridge Too Far - both based on the extensive research involving many of the real people who appeared in the movie. In the Longest Day there is the additional plus that Richard Todd who plays Major Howard in the assault on what became known as Pegasus Bridge was actually Howard's second in command in the real assault.

It's star studded and full of little cameos but perhaps the heroics of John Wayne and Robert Mitchum are a bit overblown for today's tastes.

One little aside - my father, who went over the beach at Arromanches well remembered the bearded beachmaster with the bulldog called Churchill and he always said that he ... Read More:

My 3yr old stumbled upon this video by chance and has been mesmorised by Pippi ever since. I've therefore shown the video to friends children of a similar age who also found Pippi's adventures wonderful. Upon hearing the catchy themetune a friends teenager burst into the room - and into song as she remembered the joys of this video when she was very young - absolubtley fantastic!

I bought this collection because I have been charmed by Peter Hammond for 50 years. Lost him somewhere along the way but rediscovered him when I bought the DVD set of "The Buccaneers."

So I got to work on collecting anything I could that he'd done - with a special eye to his Directing (which is very visual with great care for light and color). But I stumbled over The Huggetts and these 4 films are as charming as it can get without being treacle.

Although I am an American, I can identify with many aspects of these films. I was born in 1947 and raised in a working-class neighborhood in a family that counted weekly Grange meetings, clog dancing and Fiddling among their High Spots.

I vividly remember my girlfriend's family getting ... Read More:

This DVD is a gem. It consists of a total of 10 short or shortish stories on 3 discs, originally separate films from the late 1940's. Some are from Somerset Maugham, a few from or adapted by other writers. At least two ( The Verger and The Colonel's Lady) were later recycled into the (also recommended and on DVD) Tales of the Unexpected series of the late 70's and early 80's. The black and white is crisp and clear as can be, the sound likewise. The acting is superb, too, with many famous names appearing, not least Nigel Patrick.

Each film of the three (Trio, Quartet, Encore) is introduced by Somerset Maugham from his beautiful home and garden on the Riviera. How glamorous that must have seemed, looked at from the dingy squalor of much of 1940's Britain!

A local television station introduced me to this charming film. They had purchased a package of films produced by The Rank Organization and threw them on at all hours, with a particular fondness for four-in-the-morning airings. Given to occasional bouts of insomnia, I became familiar with the CARRY-ON films and the DOCTOR films, and non-series items like this one.

The first thing to be made clear is that Julie Christie is NOT the "fast lady" of the title. THAT is a vintage car that almost runs down non-driver Stanley Baxter. The driver is played by James Robertson Justice, whose very pretty daughter, played by Ms. Christie, persuades Baxter that it's time to catch up with the times and buy a car. Since learning to drive seems to be the key to being close ... Read More:

The acting in this film cannot be faulted but it is let down by a lame script. Perhaps this would fall into the category of a 'gentle comedy', but you would not expect that for a film set in a POW camp. The sheer superiority and arrogance of the James Robertson Justice character begins to grate about a third into the film as it seems that no circumstance is to difficult for him to surmount in a couple of minutes. His disdain for his comrades is such that there is no real sympathetic character to latch on to. The postscript, set in a 'this is your life'-type TV show is just too weak.

It is hard to believe that this film came out in the early sixties as the only logic behind this films conception is that more people went regularly to the cinema for regular entertainment ... Read More:

DVD : Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines [1965] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
Set around a fictional 1910 London to Paris air race and the rivalries of the pioneer aviators it attracts from all around the world to risk life, limb and some dodgy back-projection in the Paris sequences, Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines, or How I Flew From London to Paris in 25 Hours and 11 Minutes began life as a project on pilots Alcock and Brown for Alexander Korda. Director Annakin had already reconstructed many of the vintage aircraft before the producer's death took the project with him.

As with The Longest Day, the story provided 20th Century Fox with a great opportunity to increase its foreign box-office prospects by populating the film with popular actors from around the world, while its episodic structure and the sheer size of the cast meant that ... Read More:
