I first saw this beautiful and legendary film today and all I can say is, what a gem it really is!
The storyline is wonderful, the acting is truely unbeatable and "Kes" will make you both laugh and cry.
Lynne Perrie who later went on to play Ivy Tilsley in Coronation Street, deserves recognition as a fantastic actress, I loved her in "Corrie", "Queenie's Castle", "Follyfoot", "Leeds United" and of course, her infamous appearances on "The Word" and "Shooting Stars". But perhaps her best work is "Kes" where she plays the mouthy Mrs. Casper.
The other actors are also brilliant and the storyline is strong.
Above all, this film is a truely remarkable piece of work that I can fully recommened you see.

I gave this four rather than five stars because there are a number of pretty predictable and perhaps haggard cinematic plotlines here, history repeating itself etc.

It is an interesting portrayal of two brothers with diverging political positions, one at first reluctant to adopt armed struggle and eventually reluctant to abandon it, while the other is precisely the opposite, one allied to the new authorities and the other very much the opposite.

Its also more than a snap shot of Irish history from the time of the independence struggle against British soldiers and Black and Tans to the time of the Irish civil war.

A lot of the violence and persecution, which isnt all on behalf of the British authorities ... Read More:

A great film demonstrating the power and passion for political ideology in Europe in the the early to mid twentieth century, although also sadly demonstrating the inevitable futility when bound within the human condition. Full of inspiration and courage! Great!

DVD : The Wind That Shakes The Barley [2006]
Most of the debate surrounding Ken Loach's 2006 Palme D'Or winner seems to be concerning the historical accuracy of the plot. Whereas I wouldn't suggest that these arguments are not important, it seems most critics forgot to evaluate the actual film craft: the style, acting, use of music and camera work etc. I'm not qualified to talk about how truthful 'The Wind that Shakes the Barley' is, except to say that it hardly seems as overly biased or unbalanced as some reviewers have pointed out. However, no one apparently has deigned to point out how utterly ordinary this film is. Propanganda or not, cinema can be a powerfully emotive tool but this is quite uninspired.

While 'The Wind That Shakes The Barley' is shot with relative lushness, Loach ... Read More:

A very good film. i recommend that you watch it to understand the politics of northwern ireland intertwined with the mainland during the troubles. It shows the danger of unchecked and unaccountable security services operating in an enviornment where they can get away with murder and become a law unto themselves, and where civil liberties are trampled upon in the name of a so-called war on terror. A warning for today. You cant help see similarities with todays situation whereby we have repressive legislation and the assasination of Jean Charles Demenezes. I am reminded of a quote from Wilhelm Reich that goes 'who guards the guards, who polices the police'.

"Poor Cow" is my favourite Ken Loach film. In fact, it is my favourite film of all time. I only discovered it 2 years ago and it has a very personal connection for me. I have since read the novel that inspired it and can state that it is a very honest and faithful dramatisation of Nell Dunn's text. It is a film about a side of London life to which many will be oblivious, and, of course, many will not.

Carol White is superb as Joy, whose first name is not as ironic as it may seem. Her life may well be a vortex of poverty, squalor and unhappiness, but White (through her acting) and Loach (through his direction) portray the character with compassion and strength as someone who is sassy and fun. This same compassion shows through in all the other characters ... Read More:

This is the second film I've seen recently tackling the hot topics of immigration and exploitation, the other being Lorna's Silence. It's a Free World is a familiar story of economic migrants from Eastern Europe and beyond travelling to the UK looking for peace and prosperity, or just to raise a family in a safe environment. However when they arrive they find themselves at the bottom of the social ladder, living in cramped and often unhygienic accommodation devoid of work or dignity.

The migrant characters were lightly drawn and only one had even a little colour sketched in - almost enough for us to care for him as a person, but not quite. The acting was average and the cinematography uninspiring.

The story of a single mother struggling to ... Read More:

I am astonished I'm the first person to post a review on this masterpiece ! I'm french an in my country, Ken Loach is admired as the great film maker he truly is. And in my point of view, this film is perhaps his best, because even if you disagree with his political view, you will be deeply moved by the principal character. Great plot, great actors, it is human, complex, beautiful and captivating. Please watch it. Vive Ken Loach.

"My Name Is Joe" is a typically gritty, unflinching Ken Loach movie from 1998. It stars the excellent Peter Mullan, who gives an amiable performance as recovering alcoholic JOE.

This Glasgow-set story concerns Joe's blossoming relationship with a good-natured social worker named Sarah. The initial harmony of this relationship is soon put under pressure due to Joe's feelings of responsibility for his friend Liam. Liam, you see, has a history of heroin abuse and as a consequence a gang of drug dealing thugs are constantly darkening his door. When Joe learns that Liam is in debt (to the tune of thousands of pounds), his benevolent nature comes to the fore and Joe feels that he has no option but to help his friend. As a result, his relationship with Sarah is threatened ... Read More:
