This story is not quite "The Ipcress File" (1965) but it has its moments. The catsup, oops blood in those days was considerable thicker.

We have Harry (Michael Caine) once again being recruited by Colonel Ross (Guy Doleman), with a promotion and a 300£ annual raise. But he has other ideas and soon opportunities to take part in a great political movement. Where there is chaos there is profit. And as usual you can not tell the good guys from the bad or the idiots.

The actors as they are introduces in the story are an added plus. The Russian Colonel Stok, Oscar Homolka earlier played Dr. Prokosch in "Boys' Night Out" (1962). Who can look at Karl Malden and not think of "The Streets of San Francisco" (TV series) - Detective ... Read More:

I am a great fan of Ken Russell's work and this film must rank as one of his best! It is not a biopic in the traditional sense (if you are looking for something like that,it is probably better if you don't watch it!) , but a fascinating cinematic pastiche infused throughout with grotesque dance routines, recurring Wagnerian leitmotifs and a constantly evolving (if tongue-in-cheek) Freudian subtext. If you like your cinema over the top, then this film will thrill you.

This is a nice film, satisfying in so many ways, even if the sad conclusion is anything but, but that's the nature of romantic tragedy. This is Oliver Reed's finest film performance (apart from maybe Gladiator), and must be Ken Russell's best movie bar none. Good authentic adaption of DHL, a writer whose works often arouse strong emotions one way or another. In fact human emotion is often the main focus of all his works, rather than the more overt themes of class, or raw passion. This film has a lovely period feel to it, is very intimate in its portrayal of the relationships between people with different personalities and feelings, and it distills the mood or essence of DHL perfectly. If you're prepared for a more involving, slower paced sort of romantic ... Read More:

I saw this some twenty years ago, and haven't seen it since. It is a very particular vision of the famous night when Lord Byron, Percy Shelley and Mary Shelley spent a night in a country estate in Switzerland and decided to see who wrote the scariest story. Mary Shelley, of course, wrote Frankenstein out of that night. There are other movies on this subject - I think Roger Corman made one. Gothic is what one expects from Ken Russell - lurid, grotesque, hallucinatory, over the top. It hasn't been seen a lot since then, it hasn't become one of his classics, but it is a good film for those who like this sort of thing. And there is the addition of seeing the then young and upcoming English actors playing this - Natasha Richardson (as Mary Shelley), Gabriel Byrne ... Read More:

This is one of the silliest films I have ever seen. Set against that, I rarely watch American films so there are probably worse. At best Altered States is laughable; at worst it is tedious. The themes were vague and variable. Overall it came across as a pastiche of the worst aspects of a number of films and TV shows. Perhaps the people who produced it came up with it sitting drinking beer round a table late one night. It gives the impression of someone 'avvin' a laff'.

So what were its origins? The graphics were the worst that 2001 Space Odyssey could muster. Endless travelling down poorly rendered tunnels. Yawn! There was an idea of sorts about the origins and make-up of humanity but it was trivial and not developed. There were ludicrous scenes straight ... Read More:
