My MP Ann Cryer is in this film as an extra.

One of the best childrens films ever made in the UK. Jenny Agutter recently made another version ( her third; she was in the BBC serial of the same book prior to this version) this time playing the mother. However it was not as good and lacked the charm of Lionel Jeffries version.

A must for lovers of trains and Yorkshire.

I had not heard of this film until I read MADE IN YORKSHIRE by Tony Earnshaw and Jim Moran. They say it was the only film made by Yorkshireman James Mason in Yorkshire. I think they are wrong. He made a film with his former wife Pamela in the 1940's in Yorkshire. Her dad who was a Yorkshire textile baron, financed it.

The Water Babies film is worth watching but not as good as it could have been. It was from the same team who made The Railway Children but how could anyone hope to match that classic.

Mason is brilliant and is the underrated Billie Whitelaw.

The cartoons sadly, are not.

I have the water babies since i was a verry little girl, and the story has always intrigued me. It's a great childrens film that i feel adults can also enjoy. Just one point, if you really enjoyed the film i would recommened you not to read the book. I have read it recently thanks to this film, but i discovered from the offset that the film is extremely different to the book and i cannot watch the film in the same light ever again. Overall a great film all the family will enjoy and watch over and over again.

As the other reviewers have remarked, neither film can be faulted, they are both good old-fashioned adventure yarns which are sadly lacking in the present day. Zero sex or violence, just lashings of ginger beer, steam engines and good old public schoolboy accents.

What lets this release down is presentation. The Railway Children boasts an anamorphic widescreen print which, generally free of dirt, is lacking the full restoration it deserves. Where are the commentaries by the original children, or documentary on how the film was made? This film cries out for supplementary material but doesn't get it.

Swallows and Amazons features a full frame print, coverd in scratches, compression artifacts and is generally very grotty looking, ... Read More:

Like many others who have placed their reviews, I also watched this film as a child and was enchanted by it. I also managed to catch it on video when it was shown on TV a while ago and was really pleased to get it on DVD when itwas released. It's a film that always sticks in your mind once you've seen it.

Very few films can be safely watched by a whole family, but this is one of them and definately great to watch on a cold wet afternoon.

The fabulous Diana Dors appears as you will probably never have seen her before, and shows just how fantastic she was as a charachter actress as well as our very own british Marilyn Monroe.

It's a straight forward film, with no fancy special effects and will become a firm family favourite if ... Read More:
