(no spoiler)

I've loved all the Bond movies, ever since Dr No.

Yes, some are better than others. Some Bonds are *certainly* better than others. But they're all the the same action-packed, no-brain-required, formulaic-but-fun glorious mess of boys' toys (explained by a grumpy 'Q' - 'DO try to pay attention, 007...'), glamor girls, explosions, wacky bad-guys and political incorrectness. Yep, this is the good stuff we've come to expect from a Bond Movie.

And then they made Casino Royale...

I'm sure a lot of people will love to see Bond reinvented like this, but if you're an old time fan like me, you won't. All the traditional elements are gone. It's all become deadly serious, to the point where ... Read More:

..At last, we get Bond as he always should have been. No stupid lasers, invisible cars, flying landboats, or improbable gadgets that defy the laws of physics. No idiotic, one dimensional clichéd bad guys with impossible plans to rule the world. No smartass wisecracks from an invincible ubermensch. Just plain old espionage.

After many false starts, and many ridiculous, preposterous sequels, "Casino Royale" is very possibly the best Bond film of all time. Everything that was wrong, stupid, patronising and obviously corporate about the last few has been thankfully, and gloriously discarded : John Cleese? Impervious Killers Who Feel No Pain? Audiences openly laughing at the dreadful CGI and the preposterous diamond-faced baddies? All, finally, ... Read More:

This is truly classic light drama covering Reilly's career form the Russo-Japanese war to the rise of Stalin. The Reilly character is very charming (as are his numerous paramours) but treacherous and the story told in a compelling and serialised way. If you like good acting, realistic sets, and a good story free from all the agitating diversions in contemporary television programmes then this is for you. It would not be made today as producers feel compelled to dumb down content with infantile background `mood' noises that grind on the nerves. I suspect this is to distract from the lack of content, or perhaps most programmes these days are made for children rather than those with adult tastes. Even though it was made in the 1980s, it is not really dated except ... Read More:

Goldeneye introduced us to Pierce Brosnan as James Bond. After a 6 year hiatus it was good to see 007 back in action. Brosnan is okay, but some would maybe argue that he's a bit too smooth (a la Remington Steele) and lacks the hard edge of Connery or even Daniel Craig.

Goldeneye (named after Ian Fleming's house in Jamaica where he wrote the 14 original Bond books) has its moments, such as: the dam jump in the pre-credit sequence, the tank chase through St. Petersburg, Onatopp (a celebrated baddie in the Pantheon of Bond girls) and the final duel with Sean Bean somewhere in darkest Cuba.

I never liked the music to the four Brosnan Bonds. It's far too industrial and techie sounding (lacking the lush, suave orchestration of the earlier films). ... Read More:

No expense seems to have been spared to film around the world in exotic - if faux - locations (Namibia for Ethiopia, Thailand for Cambodia, Canada - less exotically - for the Caucasas and - totally implausibly - for the UK) which were then brilliantly enhanced by computer technology. The director claims that he aspired to making a film like 'Doctor Zhivago' - a love story set against a wider panorama of spectacular world events. This film fails miserably on both counts.
The supposed attraction between the two individually attractive stars totally fails to gel. Enough said about the love story.
As a portrayal of humanitarian work, the film was a horrible embarrassment to the agencies directly named or implied. It is cringingly inaccurate about their work ... Read More:

Hello

I'm a big Bond fan, but I only got into the films a few years ago.. "Die Another Day" was my first one I watched...

Goldeneye ~ I do like Goldeneye. It has a very unique, gritty and dangerous feel to it that other films in the series lacked. Brosnan is easily at his best here and offers with a very sleek and action-packed performance. Alec Travelyn is a pretty good villain aswell.

9/10

-----------------------------

Tomorrow Never Dies ~ Hmm... not as good as "Goldeneye" but still quite fun. The plot is very different here - a big change from Goldeneye, focusing on media corruption and the impact one man can have on the world. So its ok, not brilliant, Brosnan gives a fairly dry performance so the villains make ... Read More:

The first three times I saw this film (twice within a week; and the third a year later), I felt that it fulfilled its promise of being a first-rate, well-acted adventure thriller with delightfully comic overtones. The costumes and production values are also of the highest quality; and the music with its flamenco beats is truly exciting. I enjoyed each viewing immensely.

Anthony Hopkins portrays the elder Zorro with his usual elegant style; Antonio Banderas displays his considerable talent for comedy as Zorro's apprentice who learns (the hard way) to become a swashbuckling swordsman, and Catherine Zeta-Jones represents his perfect foil, in every sense of the term. She also does a smashing dance with Banderas that is both exciting and marvelous to behold.

Well, there are some good things about this film, but much is to be desired. Catherine Zeta-Jones looks stunning, as usual. We really get to see the trials of a man who is everyone's hero. But the magic is certainly gone from this one. The movie focuses more on the private lives of Zorro and his wife; and even leans toward a soap opera. Zorro's wife is tired of him being Zorro. In fact, the whole movie just seems tired. Zorro's son does antics that out-Zorro Zorro himself. It was really silly. I didn't care at all for the bad guys-they weren't just corrupt, but downright evil (remember Disney's Commandante?-he was just overboard, not Darth Maul). Do all bad guys in today's movies need to be worse than the last? The bad guy who was doing the dirty work really made me sick to look at and I think that's ... Read More:

I remember when I went to see this at the cinema when it came out. I had just turned fifteen and had seen a few tv spots of it as well as some posters etc and I thought 'Vertical Limit....Looks like it could be as good as Cliffhanger which is great'. So I went with my dad and saw it.

I remember being blown away literally for two hours with non-stop action and gorgeous and sexy women and characters you care about. It was right up my street. I loved it so much that when it came out on DVD I got myself a copy and watched it lots of times since. However there was a long period where I lost track of it in my house as I was sorting stuff around but I managed to find it today and hope to watch it tonight! I'm sure I'll feel fifteen all over again.

Like Cliffhanger? Give this a try because ... Read More:
