DVD : Little Women [1949] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
This is, for me, the best ever adaptation of Louisa May Alcotts 'Little Women' It is perfectly cast, beautifully acted, and just how I had pictured the girls in my imagination. It's a lovely story, of 4 sisters, Meg, Jo Beth and Amy, and their mother and father, and their lives and loves. June Allyson is the perfect Jo, and Peter Lawford a very handsome Laurie. Elizabeth Taylor plays Amy to perfection, and it is just so totally like the book. I absolutely love this version, though I have seen them all. This is by far my all-time favourite. I love the opening where the girls are walking through the snow singing, and I ALWAYS cry over Beth. They just don't make 'em like this any more, sadly. A true gem.

Wayne avoided military service during World War Two, and it shows in the movie. For example, Wayne repeatedly uses his rifle to gesture toward someone, a flagrant mistake that a recruit with one week of training would not make. Appropriately, at the movie's end the sun sinks in the east as Wayne and a Vietnamese child gaze out to sea. The movie's grasp of the war in Vietnam is as confused as its grasp of geography.

A marvelous story from the writer James Hilton. There are some changes in the story, and some scenes are chocolate box such as the cottage bt the stream with trout in the lake, and the horse and cart pulling up with the bride and groom. Ronald Colman and Greer Garson are first class actors, but they seem to old to be to old for the parts they play.Coleman looks like a man in his late fiftys. Walking out of the unguarded asylum in 1919, when in fact he would be in his early twentys called to enlist in 1914. The characters Smithy meets in the gradual unfolding story are interesting, Biffa Briggs the boxer, Harrison the man who comes to work for Smithy or Charles Rainier as he is revealed to be, and of course the romantic interest of Paula Ridgeway played by Greer ... This is the best film ever but try as I might I can not get hold of it for region 2. If anyone knows where or how I can find this film to play on my DVD player, here in England, I would be grateful.
Same goes for "My Beautiful Son" AKA "Strange Relations" in the American market.

I love it. From all the epics made in Hollywood it has the best script. I don't know another one that makes me laugh. This one truly has a good sense of humor and sarcasm. Not to forget the story about love, hate, courage - simply everything that makes a good movie. The actors are great - no one will forget Peter Ustinov's performance, and Robert Taylor - here he is not only as handsome as a man can be, his acting is also fine with a good sense of irony, great professionalism, topped by a very charming appearance.

This is my favoutite film of all time. The story, based on a James Hilton novel is rather clever. A first world war officer has shell shock, loses his memory and cannot even remember who he is. Placed in an asylum he manages to 'walk out' on the day war ends and 'bumps into' Greer Garson. They fall in love, marry and have a baby. Then, on a trip to Liverpool he gets knocked down and his memory returns, however, his memory from shell shock to marriage to becoming a father is lost. The story becomes quite intense at times with one of the most wonderful endings any film could have. I haven't given the story away, just the beginning as I wish to lead you into one of the most memorable films you could ever watch.

Forget special effects, forget high power ... Read More:
