An enjoyable film , but not as powerful or as moving as the film Amistad in conveying the cruelty and injustice of slavery. Despite this, an enjoyable film, especially the rousing bagpipe rendition of Amazing Grace at the end which was worth the price of the DVD alone.

Season 2 of HBOs excellent 'Rome' continues on exactly were the first season finished. Caesar has been assasinated and the subsequent power struggle once again sets Rome towards civil war. Mark Antony and Octavian must fight for survival and they try to bide for time until they can extract revenge.

Once again the acting is hugely impressive and the characters are all deep, complex and highly enjoyable. This is a wonderfull production and its hard to find a better television series. Its not for the faint hearted, there is plenty of blood, sex and violence for the more timid of us to shy away from ..... but if, like me, you like your drama's gritty and realistic then this is for you.

Excellent.

For any true Rock 'n' Roll fan and any former members of the growing-up cultures of the Fifties and Sixties...Seventies too, you just can't let these two get away - "That'll Be The Day" and it's sequel, "Stardust".

It's a fabulous roller-coaster ride that isn't just limited to the fairground, depicting the social and musical changes of life in 1950's Britain as seen through the eyes of the young man who turns out to be 'the minstrel of a generation' - Jim Maclaine...very amicably portrayed by teen Pop idol (at the time!), David Essex. Infact, it was Mr. Essex who was nominated for the Best Newcomer BAFTA along with Rosemary Leach as Best Supporting Actress in the role of his long-suffering Mother. A stellar cast including Robert Lindsay, Billy ... Read More:

Collecting the four movies featuring `official' Bond number five, Pierce Brosnan:

Goldeneye: Pierce Brosnan and Martin Campbell (director of the BBC's classic eco-thriller Edge Of Darkness) brought the Bond series back from the brink with this formulaic but rewarding effort, both a homage to, and an updating of, the old formula. Brosnan, in his debut as Bond, tries his hardest to flesh out the character, whilst Sean Bean is good value as the villain. Famke Janssen gives what is still her most memorable movie performance as the sexually voracious Xenia Onnatopp, but on the downside Judi Dench's luvvie, career-woman M makes her unwanted debut, Alan Cumming ponces around in that way that only Alan Cumming can, and Robbie Coltrane struggles with a ... If I had wanted a documentary about Bletchley Park during WW2, I would have bought one of several good titles available, or a DVD if there was one.

Want I wanted, and got, was a really good fictional account set around the code breaking activities of that centre. The story is loosely based on real characters and events, but it is a STORY, and a very enjoyably told and terrifically acted one. I like all the actors, they work well together. The story is plausible, but I'm not interested in 'is this or that detail correct', I just want a good hour or two of entertainment set in the period of WW2, around that unique institution, and I was well satisfied.

I cannot understand why people have to nitpick. Its not as if anyone is deliberately ... Read More:

Sigourney Weaver was nominated for an Oscar for this film, and should have won it. This is one of the finest portayals of passion bordering on obsession in film history. Weaver portrays Dian Fossey, in a story that sticks pretty close to the facts that were then known. Fossey, who was an amateur naturalist (as were Charles Darwin and Gregor Mendel), persuades (almost coerces) world-renowned archaeologist Louis Leakey into sponsoring her on an expedition to find, count, and study the mountain gorillas of Rwanda in central Africa. Thus begins Fossey's crusade to study and protect these gentle giants. She has to oppose farmers who want the land for farming, government bureaucrats who don't understand the needs of the gorillas, and poachers, and she will do ANYTHING ... Read More:

After the disappointment of Tomorrow Never Days, it perhaps shouldn't have been too surprising that, as per the usual EON pattern of alternating good and bad Bond films, The World is Not Enough turned out rather well. It helps that it has a stronger plot this time round as well as some attempt at an element of mystery - along with For Your Eyes Only this is the only Bond where the identity of the real villain is withheld for the first half of the movie. It's also more character-based than usual, with some interesting dialogue that takes on a different dimension once you know who's on the side of the angels and who isn't. The Maguffin is an oil-based variation on Goldfinger's big scheme, but the execution is very different and rather more grounded. Brosnan has the best character ... Read More:

TWINE is definitely a step up from its predecessor - more plot, more character, more realistic. Scriptwriters Purvis and Wade have brought a much needed dose of fresh thinking to the series, while never taking away from the elements we expect. Indeed, the requisite elements - chases (boat on Thames, on skis, in BMW, etc), Bond girls (two - Denise Richards and Sophie Marceau), Bond music (David Arnold really settling into the position as master of Bond music with a great score) and so on, all are well up to par. Plus a few new notes... Bond is injured for almost the entire movie, and `M' gets out into the field (and proves her mettle) - all great new twists on the formula. Indeed the villain himself comes across less like a two dimensional villain and almost more of a tragic ... Read More:

I'm half way through watching Series 1 and have been happily transported to the past when I excitedly looked forward to Follyfoot. Over the years, I've fondly sung the half-remembered title music only to now realise that what I'd forgotten I've been making up as I went along! The series has obviously dated and I preferred to watch it on a smaller TV - it looked a bit sorry for itself on my 38" HD tv! But what a treat it is to watch - I'm enjoying the stories and scenery and relishing the storylines. I think that today's pony mad young brigade would enjoy it too. As soon as I've finished series 1, I'll be ordering Series 2.
