Seen this at the cinema and a couple of times on TV.Bought this to try out my new KEF Kit 100 system and was not disappointed.Still makes you think how young these "men" were and a visit to the American War Cemetery at Madingley nr Cambridge only confirms this.

This is a very very powerful film, apparently based on actual events; Some of those who lived through the events in Rwanda took part in the film as extras or technicians (I prefer not to use the term "survivor", which has been cheapened by its use to describe Jews who moved comfortably from Germany to the UK or USA in the 1930's and thus "survived" the "holocaust" in Hampstead or Brooklyn).

John Hurt plays, memorably, a priest who is also the director of a Catholic school in Rwanda. When the Hutu majority (who exercise political power) start to hack to death with pangas the generally more cultured Tutsi minority, he elects to stay with the school, its compound now packed with refugees. The UN force in the school is ordered to leave and ... Read More:

This is certainly an enjoyable film and is not overblown. I came to the film with low expectations and was pleased that these were quelled. My only canard is the brief foray the film makes into the high politics of Jacobitism. The Duke of Argyll was only 33 in 1713, but in this film he's middle aged at least. As commander in chief in Scotland he was a strong Whig and thus anti-Jacobite. It would have been good to have seen Roy's ambiguous behaviour during the Fifteen, too, but that would have been another story. There's a degree of anti-Englishness in the film, but its not too blatant. However, though not a great film, it is an agreeable way to pass a couple of hours.

As a usually emotionally constipated UK resident, film viewer, I should sneer at the marshmallow sentiments, home spun morality, and all round apple pie consistency of this Capra'esque story ....... but I love it!

Michael J Fox is just so likeable, that it is difficult not to root for him, and Julie Warner is not just a simpering local girl who is destined to end up with an essentially decent but uninspiring local guy. The early scenes remind me of Northern Exposure (buy this it's great!) and the odd ball characters all have a back story. However, essentially it is a boy meets girl, boy and girl are attracted, boy leaves girl, and then comes back. It's no Annie Hall, but hey we all need comfort films now and again!

When faced with pinpointing the worst movie I've seen this decade, I don't have to look further than the truly atrocious Basic Instinct 2, which was as awful as most film writers predicted it would be. I was never a fan of the original, but at least it felt like a real Hollywood film, with an A-list leading man, a believably seedy location, and a director who at least knew how to shoot a sex scene. This sequel was painful viewing, with a cast of quite-respected British actors muddling their way through a story that wouldn't have passed muster as one of Shannon Tweed's bone-headed Body Chemistry-style efforts (which were of course all produced in the wake of the original Basic Insinct). In fact, with its London locations and nearly all-British cast, the whole thing ... Read More:

DVD : The Jackal [1998]
One of the films of the mid-1990s when America had gotten out of its anti-Russian paranoia after the fall of the Berlin Wall. The Russians and the Americans are working together against international terror-mongers. A real cocktail. The Russian mafia, slightly Georgian and Caucasian in those days (for the Americans, see Red Heat), the Basque separatist gone underground, the IRA getting little by little out of the closet and back on the political turf, and then the free-lance American adventurers who are doing it for the pleasure of killing in the most visible and gross way possible. But we have to note there is a traitor in the team and the traitor is a Russian of course. The Russians have never been totally redeemed. And now the Georgian mafia has gone back to Georgia and ... DVD : Scandal [1989] (REGION 2) (PAL) [Dutch Import]

Film of the true story that came to be known as 'The Profumo Affair'.

Not a bad movie telling this story, but way over the top with regards to nudity and 'explicit' dialogue. However, the main facts of the time come across pretty well, and also shows both how irresponsibly people can behave in high government offices, and equally how people can be used as 'scapegoats' and 'dropped' at the tip of a hat when necessary.

No one could watch this and not come away from it feeling quite nauseous as to how politics and those in high places behave... Despite all this though, sympathy for 'Ward' (played by John Hurt) does surface at the end.

The film is rather slow, and does not really get going until about an hour in.

De niro is intense as always, hilarious and brilliant at the start as the pathetic dwight courting ellen barkins character, then turning cruel and tough with an ease only someone of de niros talent could achieve.
Di Caprio is nothing less then brilliant as tobias, another great performance(whats eating gilbert grape?) from him.
Well worth a watch to see the type of mental strenght it can take some people to break free.
