This is a staggeringly good piece of TV drama which has justifiably become a classic. It's hard to imagine any producer today taking the time to explore a novel in the way this adaptation does, a full 11 episodes which allow the viewer to luxuriate in the story and thoroughly explore the characters. There has always been debate over whether there was a mythological "Golden Age of TV", but I think the early 1980s saw something quite remarkable at Granada Studios, at least in the field of period adaptations, and Brideshead might just be the pinnacle.

Evelyn Waugh's novel is a heady evocation of time and place, as well as an exploration of spirituality, and the series captures all this with consummate skill, from the glorious period ... Read More:

DVD : Brideshead Revisited - Complete Series

Goodness me, people do get their knickers in a twist about this series. Although there is plenty that is excellent about it (namely the performances) there is one crashing great problem with it and that's the screenplay which is just plain lazy to the point of excess (if that isn't some kind of oxymoron).

This must have been an easy ride for John Mortimer. All he did was take the dialogue from the novel and stick it in screenplay form, voila. Don't believe me? Read a chapter of the novel, watch an episode, keep going to the end and you'll see what I mean. And any other gaps are just plugged with long tracts of voiceover which is always an indication that a writer doesn't have the creativity to do something more filmic.

This set is intriguing, beguiling, captivating and frustrating. I'm no Beckett purist, so I found some of the liberties taken with the films, such as 'What Where' the most exciting pieces on this set. 'Play', however, is the high point here, with the perfect marriage of Beckett's text and a thoroughly visceral use of camera. There is little negative to say apart from the actual DVD design itself, with the same snatch of music used for every menu, and the same interviews included in both the extras accompanying the plays and the documentary about the project. This makes the high price for this set a little hard to bear. But the films themselves are worth it...

DVD : The Little Match Girl [1985]
The wealthy Duttons, who appear to have everything, take in a young orphan girl, Molly (Keshia Knight-Pulliam from 'The Cosby Show'), at Christmas. The non-conformist teenage son finds her selling matches on the street, and brings her home. Although, outwardly, they appear to be almost perfect, the Duttons have family conflicts and also, through a cruel scheme, are blamed for forcing immigrants to move out of Dutton-owned tennant buildings. It becomes up to Molly to bring the family back together.
This charming film is suitable for everyone in the family, and is especially good for Christmas viewing. It really is very sweet, with actors such as Rue McClanahan (The Golden Girls), William Daniels (Boy Meets World), and of course Keshia Knight-Pulliam ... Read More:
