have seen this film more than a dozen times and it never stops to amaze me.. the perfect film combination of a history lesson, action/adventure, suspence and romance, cant believe that the oscars of its year missed it.. many great characters with most given relative depth, and a daniel day-lewis perfectly casted, establishing himself after winning the oscar for my left foot and showing of what is to come from him: in the name of.., gangs of ny, the crucible, there will be blood more recently.
A superb multi-layered story, hard and bloody at times but also soft and romantic.. one of the best music scores ever on film (!), visually stunning with breathtaking picture and cinematography, one of these films that makes u think "thats what ... Read More:

Hollywood at its very very best. The performances from Al Pacino especially & Russell Crowe were spellbinding. An intelligent & totally absorbing film.

This is a decent movie, but not what I expected. The acting and everything regarding the production is good but its the portayal of Ali himself that annoys me. Sure, they show his couragousness, his bravery, his greatness in the ring .... but where is Ali's legendary witt and sense of humour, its simply not there. The most noteable thing about Ali, when watching the interviews he conducted at that time, was his humour, his wit and his sense of fun .... none of that is present in this movie. Instead they portray Ali as a quite subdued and softly spoken individual with none of the personality. Its not Will Smith's fault as he turns in a quality performance ... but the film doesnt capture the man himself and not as we knew him. Obviously there was a lot more to Ali's ... Read More:

I absolutely love this film. It has the perfect balance between action and drama and the performances are truely great. I love the fact that my two favourite actors (Pacino and DeNiro) are in it as enemies.

I cannot believe that some people have given it 1 star!!

This film is not particularly rich as for the content. A professional killer has been hired to eliminate all the witnesses and even the cops and other prosecution personnel in some criminal case. Banal. He does not want to drive his own car and he does not want to hire a car and an accomplice to drive him around. So he comes at night and just hires a taxi and its driver. That makes him difficult to trace. But that creates some problems because the taxi-driver is not really willing to do the job. And then the two are like mutual prisoners or custodians. One cannot work without the other and one cannot escape from the other. Yet the taxi-driver, after a long series of killings, finds the courage to cause an accident which means the arrival of the cops, but that also means the ... Read More:

Stunning film making from Michael Mann. I have discussed with others and this film is going to be one you love or hate - I was the only one in 5 people or so who loved it so be wary.

The film opens in a deliberately disorientating fashion - it initially appears to be showing us a police exercise in a night club but almost immediately pulls us out as an informant telephones Crockett & Tubbs to report the trouble he is in. This draws the two into a drugs tale that is told through visuals and whilst complex and stimulating is not complicated. Hence my confusion at the viewers moaning that they did not understand it and who want everything laid out on a plate for them and presumably to switch their brains off when watching a film. If you want to be challenged get ... Read More:

With Numb/Hardcore blasting on the soundtrack Michael Mann launches you straight into the seething underworld in which vice cops Crockett (Colin Farrell) and Tubbs (Jamie Foxx) operate, without opening credits or a title banner, and goes on steadfastly to resist the convention of slowing down to introduce the audience to who and what they're watching. The high-definition video photography - dark, lustrous, sometimes faintly grainy like a high-quality pirate - compounds the film's strange flatness.
The bottom line on the film is that is a very smart, tightly paced, action-packed police thriller with beautiful cinematography and great performances underscored by a compulsive tension that builds from frame 1 until the end of the movie.

The bottom line on the public is ... Read More:

This early Michael Mann (pre Miami Vice) movie took a impeccable dive into the mind of a thief (and the work) of a professional thief. If you like psychology, or maybe action intelligence, than this movie is for you. The movie features a major heist similar to the famous heist in RIFIFFI (1956).

James Caan (The Godfather), Robert Prosky, Tuesday Weld (Once upon a Time in America, Michael Mann and Tangerine Dream all combine forces here to great effect.
This is Caan's finest performance as Frank, a middle-aged jewel thief who is obviously determined to make a long-cherished dream come true: Retire from his criminal life, marry, start a family, and live happily ever after (the ageless crime plot - one last score).
He carries a photo collage in his wallet as a ... Read More:
