Based on the book by George Orwell, this is one of the most disturbing films I've seen n a long time. In fact it is probably more relevant in the UK today than at any time since the novel first appeared. John Hurt is fantastic in a nightmare world of an overbearing government personified in the form of Big Brother staring at everyone in every room. The notion that things we take for granted - real food, freedom of thought, love and families - could one day become forbidden by law is certainly a terrifying one. Cleverly written and realised, cerebral but never boring, there are some creepy images that really stay with you. Mention must go to the scenes in Room 101 and the chief torturer, who is the picture of menacing calm. An all-time ... Read More:

directed with a light and humourous touch, Il Postino conveys a powerfull message about what is to be appreciated in the world - beauty, love, passion, friendship, loyalty. Can be enjoyed on many levels , and repays rewatching after 10 years, as I have just done.
We are introduced, seductively, via Pablo Neruda's relationship with the postman/peasant, to the concept of 'metaphore'( that's the Italian, and that makes it sound more poetic ! ). Often I find poetry difficult to listen to - here , in this film, there are only a few actual poetic lines, but they are like nuggets.

Ok, love shakespeare, excellent set of DVD, recomended. But I would not purchase it from Amazon again. In fact I don't think I will be purchasing from Amazon EU again.

I tried to complain about the seller Amazon s.a.r.l, who is the company that does business in the UK, for sending me mail shots from British Gas and Bupa in with my package. I cannot use either of them as I am not a UK resident nore was the sending address a UK address, but they still felt it was fine to send me down to the recycling place.

When I tried to complain the first time I got "thanks for your suggestion" when I was looking for answers, and "send a letter to this UK address if you want to take if further" when I asked for them to answer my questions. ... Read More:

DVD : Flawless [2007] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
Every robbery has a motive in itself. The main reason is of course the material gain. In the film "Flawless" we do not know the main reason for the robbery until the very end. An old janitor trying hard to find comfort during his pension? A glass-ceilinged woman executive taking her revenge for non-promotion? Or some other reason hidden deep inside their completely unknown lives. Michael Caine deserves credit as he plays wonderfully the cunning janitor. The film grips the audience as the robbery scenes grow tense. As the investigation deepens we feel the strain of the co-robbers. What strikes me hard is that in every aspect of the life in the West there is always a corruption in health, finance, education systems and inthe end always ordinary people face the ... Read More:

DVD : White Mischief [1987]
Having known a lady who was in Kenya from 1943 (3 years after the events on which this film is based) and having an English wife born in British East Africa a dozen years later, White Mischief was of huge interest to me quite apart from its intrinsic merit.

Jock Delves-Broughton (Joss Ackland) is in financial trouble and has left 1940 England with creditors pressing (not surprising: he spent up to £120,000 annually, equivalent to perhaps £5 million or even £10 million today!). He buys a place near Nairobi and settles with his much younger and very beautiful (especially but not only when unclothed) wife Diana (Greta Scacchi). She has been "bought" by him in return for an allowance of £80,000 annually, for 7 years. She, however, falls in love with ... Read More:

DVD : Another Time, Another Place [1983]
Superb cinematography (filmed on location in the shires of Ross and Inverness) which captures the raw, harsh working conditions of farm labourers in Scotland during WWII. The film details the local reaction to a group of Italian P.O.W.'s sent to work amongst them as part of a rehabilitation programme.

Michael Radford's direction is excellent as he strives for total realism, and Phyllis Logan is truly wonderful as the young married woman seeking more from life than a cold and frustrating marriage. In fact, all of the performances are uniformly excellent.

The only negative aspect to me was the editing of the film which could have been better, tending to jump all over the place and give no real sense of time or continuity.
