This was Italian director Michelangelo Antonioni's first film in colour, and was to be his last film in Italy for many years as after this he decamped first to the UK ("Blow Up") and thence to the US ("Zabriskie Point", "The Passenger") before eventually returning to native soil to make "The Mystery of Oberwald" in the 80's. It arrived as the end of a sequence of controversial but ground-breaking films detailing the modern condition - "L'Avventura", "La Notte" and "L'Eclisse" - all also featuring Monica Vitti who has the lead role here.

This subject of the film is the relationship between the modern industrial world and those that fit (or, in the case of the Vitti character, do not fit) within it. Antonioni conjures a strange beauty ... Read More:

Went to the pictures to see this one, the Regent Cinema in Poole, long gone now, has the Dolphin Shopping Centre built on where it was.
Of course, The Yardbirds were my main attraction for going to see the film, as was the case for many of my peers. Since then we have heard The Who were originally the first choice for the featured band, but they were touring and unable, hence Jeff Beck's rather uncharacteristic guitar-smashing routine, which needed to be done to fit in with the plot, (but note how the guitar changes from an expensive Les Paul to a cheap semi-acoustic model, which also smashed-up far better!)
'Blow Up' was the very first British film to feature, and get away with full-frontal nudity; this was the 1960's and things were changing ... Read More:

This film gets a very high rating in the Halliwell Film Guide and I can see that, in its time 1960, it will have been ground-breaking in its naturalistic filming technique and its portrayal of liberal sexual behaviour. It was a bit long for the amount of content, but I did watch it to the end and thought it a well-made film dealing with complex feelings and human interactions.

A jaded journalist steals another man's identity & gets embroiled in arms trafficking connected to North African liberation movements.
In the early 1970s there were many attempts to fuse the European art house movie with the Hollywood thriller - The Passenger is probably the most successful example, though today it will probably appeal to art house cinephiles more than to fans of typical Jack Nicholson blockbusters.
Antonioni was never better - almost every shot & frame is extraordinary but in an unostentatious way (not always the case with Antonioni!). The entire complicated final scene seems to be filmed in one long circular take, which will have technical types wondering how it was done. The plot, narrative & dialogue are as focused as any "New Hollywood" ... Read More:

Nice film and a really nice transfer. Though it would have been nice to have a commentary or more extras (as Criterions Antonioni-DVDs. But the value for money is good anyway, and this rich film can be watched several times. Recommended.

The film starts with two people silently orbiting each other as the whirr of an electric fan circulates hot air around a neat suburban apartment. The atmosphere is tense which conveys the possibility of a sleepless night spent amidst the verbal/non-verbal death throes of a doomed relationship. These first few minutes set the scene for the rest of the film - a deep exploration of human relationships, particularly the potential for emotional paralysis and incommunicable feelings of spiritual barrenness. These themes are explored through a myriad of situational compositions and introspective camerawork and, significantly, the character of the young, energetic stockbroker Piero (Delon). For me Peiro plays a key role in this film for he acts as counterpoint to Vittoria's (Vitti) angst ridden conscience. ... Read More:

The film is fab.
Antonioni has such a distinctive eye for lines and colour that you'd think he'd be a prime candidate for high definition.
But this transfer does no favours to blu-ray as the way ahead.
I see little difference between my dvd version and this BFI blu-ray disc. It's way overpriced when you also take into account the limited extras.

If companies continue with banal transfers from copy negs like this, then blu-ray isn't going to catch on.

Maybe not as great as L'Avventura or La Notte, but still a great film. As in L'Avventura a girl disappears, and as in La Notte the protagonist is a director searching for a (new) woman to love. I liked this movie, the acting is good, the characters are interesting, the plot is captivating and the ending is ambiguous. And for about 7GBP it is good value for money. The transfer is good, though there are no extras. If you like Antonioni, you should buy/watch this one. Recommended!

Three short films by three directors Michelangelo Antonioni, Steven Soderbergh and Wong Kar Wai supposedly about erotic love.

The first offering from Wong Kar Wai about the unrequited love of a Chinese male dressmaker for his courtesan client is obviously the work of the master that gave us "In the mood for Love" and "2046" but I found the plot implausible and could not get fully involved.

The second short by Steven Soderbergh starts and ends in colour and the main central section is in black and white. The film appears to be a rather pointless conceit involving a dream within a dream during the black and white section.

Apparently Michelangelo Antonioni was ninety two and seriously disabled by a stroke when he made this almost incomprehensible short comprising long ... Read More:

Wish this set contained other Delon movies other than those already released previously in the English market (Plein Soleil, L'Eclisse, Un Flic, and Flic Story have all been released before), however the picture quality in this set is excellent, and it includes some extra materials for L'Eclisse and Traitement de Choc. Not to mention the latter film has never been out on DVD (and available with English subtitle either) before! This set contains Delon's work with some of the most important directors in his career. So buy it!
