The Stand is a strange 'film' to review. It is, after all, a 6-hour mini-series split in the middle by a large time gap. Whilst this allows for deeper characterisation and plot development, it also means a smaller budget, B-list actors and cheesy acting. My God, is there cheesy acting. It is still my belief that Molly Ringwald had her eyes on all of the Razzie 'awards'.
The 'film' gets under way in spectacular fashion, with one of the greatest intro sequences / music cues ever, with Blue Oyster Cult's 'Don't Fear (The Reaper)' playing against the backdrop of an underground facility full of corpses. However, after the intro has finished, things take a brief downturn. ALL the supporting actors set new standards in wooden acting (check out ... Read More:

Having recently read and quite enjoyed King's novels Desperation and Dreamacatcher, I thought I would check out the films of the books. While Dreamcatcher was a big budget (almost $70 million) mess, with unbelievably misjudged casting and abysmally wooden acting, this TV movie gets most things right. Tom Skerritt and, especially Ron Perlman, put in good performances which gel together a solid cast.

The movie is a sensible, well written and streamlined adaptation of King's novel, and I was pleasantly surprised to find myself enjoying it. While it is no Misery, Shawshank or Green Mile, it is still entertaining in a way that the disasterous Dreamcatcher could only dream of.

Having said all that, it's still a country mile from ... Read More:

I would give 5+ stars to the original film as it is one of the greatest films made, but buy it on its own-save yourself the shelf space. The others are like cheap tv movies.

Stephen King never liked Kubrick's adaptation of his eponymous novel. Granted. Then he finally did it himself in the form of a mini series for TV. He had two things to carefully avoid: direct similarities to the film and direct betrayal of his own book since he criticized Kubrick's film as not being faithful to the book. As for the first objective, he tries hard and succeeds on a few elements. Success with the animals carved from bushes in the garden. Success with the hotel that is not the one used by Kubrick, hence smaller and less spectacular. But then the differentiation he is trying hard to introduce makes him change some elements that are directly from the book, hence he drops elements I personally consider essential in the book. The use of the radio: ... Read More:

Another reviewer rates this as 'two' because Alien is much better than all of these films.

Quite right, Alien is much better, but competing with Alien is not what they set out to do! To judge it on this basis would be like saying that a Mini is no good as a car because it couldn't beat Lewis Hamilton's F1 vehicle in a race.

Instead, judge it against what it is: a TV series boxed set, and realise that what you're getting here are seven films by, gasp, 'masters of horror' for the price of one. Their combined budgets were probably less than that of Alien (or at least what Alien would cost today) and one of the commentaries mentions having just a handful of days to do all the shooting.

All are worth watching - I even liked ... Read More:

Cigarette Burns: Just plain boring, rubbish plot and unsatisfactory ending.

Dreams in the Witch-House: Not seen this one yet so cannot judge.

Incident On and Off A Mountain Road: Really, really good! Just...great! I loved this one and the ending was just 'wow'.

Chocolate: Kinda 'meh', doesn't do much but the flashback narrative is well done.

Sick Girl: Accurately portrays how awkward homosexual relationships are sometimes! Plus there's not too much 'bug-i-ness' for those who are arachnophobic. The actress who played Ida was spot on and was the one woman in the series who didn't get her breasts out, which makes her all the better! There was a point where I just wanted to see what would happen with them and their ... Read More:

DVD : Critters 1 To 4
Critters are small, fury aliens with a veracious appetite who come to earth in order to feed. The films are something of a horror comedy in a similar vain to the Gremlins films. The first film sees the Critters terrorising an isolated farmstead until two shape shifting bounty hunters come to track them down. This film is probably the best of the four being funny and gruesome in equal measure.

The second Critters film is almost a direct sequel to the first and takes place roughly two years later when Critter eggs start to hatch and terrorise the town. Although good this second film is not as the first and is slightly more comedic. Anyone who enjoyed the first should also enjoy the second.

Critters 3 is a significant down-step in quality from the first ... Read More:

In the small town of Travis, Indiana, Mother-and-son Charles, (Brian Krause) and Mary Brady, (Alice Krige) move in, and Charles immediately sets his sets on Tanya Robertson, (Madchen Amick) a girl from school. Tanya seems just as smitten with him as he is with her, and they spend an increasing amount of time together. However, no one in town believes their story about being relocated from another state and the police get involved in the matter. When Charles turns on Tanya, showing himself and his mother to be a form of cat creature, it becomes an all-out search to stop them.

The Good News: With Stephen King, you can never really tell what he's going to make with his films. Either he makes some of the best horror in the genre, or he makes ones that are pretty mind-numbingly ... Read More:
