"You have obtained exactly what you deserved; no less, and certainly no more." Thus intones as his catchphrase the sadistic and soon-to-retire Mr Crocker-Harris (played wonderfully by Albert Finney), Head of Languages, at an English country boarding-school, in this adaptation, Milton Abbey in Dorset.

This is the man who finds it worthy of him to denigrate his pupils before their classmates, and whose idea of an end of term treat is to read an extract from Aeschylus's `Agamemnon'. (The title of the film, and of the play by Terence Rattigan from which it is adapted by Ronald Harwood, alludes to the translation of this ancient Greek classic by the nineteenth-century poet Robert Browning.) Crocker-Harris is so full of sarcasm and sadism ... Read More:

Miss Julie is a seriously excellent adaptation. Some might dislike its very stagey feel, but with the amount of utterly uninteresting plays I've seen lately, I could not have been more pleased! With only 3 proper characters (although we might add the silent presence of the Count), a set basically consisting of one room and some very intense dialogue, it's a very claustrophobic film.

Saffron Burrows is quite spectacular, carrying the emotions of Miss Julie magnificently. And Julie is a pretty emotionally unstable gal! The passion, the anger and the vulnerability all explode onto the screen (the bird-scene is just pitch perfect) and leave Mullan, to be frank, a little behind. Still, his performance is subtle, even if it does not quite ... Read More:

Richard Gere in unfamiliar territory, as a devious and dangerous bent cop.

His character bends the rules and skims money from protection rackets, drug deals and prostitution. Andy Garcia works within the Internal Affairs (cops watching cops as they say) department and Gere's vicious, murderous reign is uncovered.

Very clever and fast moving film.

DVD : Leaving Las Vegas [1996]
If you like listening to endless pieces of music and watching films with very little dialogue then this is the one for you, this has got them both in abundance!!

I don't recall hearing about it, but there must have been an international strike the year that this was made as this is the only reason why Nicholas Cage could have ever won an academy award for acting, he was dire in this film, proving yet again that he simply can not act in a serious film, they gave him very little to say, so they're obviously well aware of his acting ability (which is limited at best).

This film only serves to do two things, if you're an alcoholic and you keep on drinking then there's a chance that you'll drink yourself to death and second that if you're a prostitute/hooker ... Read More:

Mr Jones is a film which could, and should, have been much better. Richard Gere, the director and the writer have gone to considerable lengths to research the subject of manic depression and this is very evident. Gere's performance here is surely one of his best and with Mike Figgis has created a convincing portrait of a man with a crippling mental illness. You can feel his absolute exhilaration when high, especially during the classical concert and you sense his descent into hell when he crashes into depression. Unfortunately this section is less than satisfactory simply because it is too short, this I believe because the studio decided in its infinite wisdom that the audience should not be subjected to subject matter which is too depressing. My response to that is not printable. ... Read More:

The 4-way split screen is a very novel and engaging device, and it's a great achievement to have constructed a 90 minute film with no (visible) cuts. Unfortunately, the "plot" revolves around actors meeting for an audition, and ends with a "maverick director" pitching an idea for a film shot on 4 digital cameras with no cuts. In other words, the technology was more important to Figgis than the narrative.

The concept is more satisfying than the movie. Shame.

Could not find any means to play the 4.0 DTS soundtrack - that is if there is one recorded on the disc. The player keept reporting that its playing the stereo English track whatever i did. The same thing for the subtitles as well. There are no menu options for changing the audio or subtitles.
The only 4.0 channel i could hear on this disc is the Studio Canal flick at the beginning.
Bad and cheap disc authoring, i could have sworn it was a pirated DVD if i didnt buy it from amazon myself. If it was another movie i would return it today.
The studios should show some respect to their movies when putting them on DVDs or Hi def discs.

As I bought this film I was surprised how I had never heard of the title when it looked like such a good movie, but after watching it I have realised it's because the story is boring and predictable and as a result of that I can't even begin to give it a good mark!!!Stone is her usual pouty, moody character that she seems to play in most of her films and Dennis Quaid got on my nerves constantly, playing the hurt and distraught husband trying to 'keep his family safe' which has been done before in many other films!!Nothing really original here, a man trying to get revenge on people, a few fights, a sex scene or two and then a climax which seems to have have been done before as well!!
