Strongman and enforcer Jack Carter (Michael Caine) returns to his native North East (of England) to investigate the suspicious death of his brother. Here he encounter a world of sleaze, booze, violence, casual sex and people in search of easy money.

Hard to call it a classic early British gangster film given that they were so few around, but more a cracking thriller that makes full use of its cast, plot and (unusual) Newcastle Upon Tyne location.

Writer-Director Mike Hodges wanted violence with reality and he delivers it with real punch. Unlike most thrillers bystanders are not immune from the action and at various stages harsh punishment is handed out for minor crimes by anti-hero Caine.

Ben Dinsdale " There's no reason for killing or dying anymore. What's more, there's no reason for living!"
Anna: "That's a terrible thing to say!"

A Prayer For The Dying features what might very well be the most effective opening scene in all of cinema. Practically nothing is said, yet as the viewer you know exactly what is happening. It perfectly sets up the rest of the film. What happens? A ragged band of IRA punks in Northern Ireland have a bomb rigged to go off when some British Army jeeps drive by on patrol. Unexpectedly, and unfortunately, a school bus carrying about a dozen 10-year-old girls passes the army vehicles. Kaboom. Both Rourke and his best friend Docherty (Liam Neeson) are disgusted by their misstep. ... Read More:

This is one of the most intelligent, brilliant thrillers. The direction and the cast are superb.

Croupier's protagonist (Clive Owen, in a very interesting performance in his pre-fame days) is a taciturn, unsuccessful writer living in London, who at the instigation of his father accepts a job as a croupier in a casino. He takes the job in order to write a novel about it, in which he can watch this particular milieu from above, in a detached and superior position. In the casino he meets a number of people, including the troubled Bella (Kate Hardie, in my view, the movie's most compelling character). Other character, the gambler Jani (Alex Kingston) will eventually involve him in a plot to rob the place. This movie let us know more details about the gambling business that we may be interested to know, and the final twist doesn't really hold water, ... Read More:

What is there not to like about this film? I agree with another reviewer, they dont make em like this anymore! It has its faults but thats part of its charm for me. They even managed to chuck in a few funny lines from time to time.
The film really captures the style of the comics and everyone seems to be having fun making it. Not a year goes by that I dont catch this movie at least once and its always a treat to see.
And the theme music ROCKS!

An overlooked gem. Clive Owen is completely mesmerising, and utterly convincing, as writer and croupier Jack. The plot tricks run like sleight of hand, you get distracted at just the right moments, and the characters, even when they are lying are totally believable.

Alex Kingston and the rest of the supporting cast do a good job, but the film belongs to Owen.

Highly recommended

I freely admit this is a very dumb movie. But somehow it really makes me laugh. I particularly enjoyed Dinsdale Landen as an ever-so-British army commander. There are plenty of affectionate digs at the sci-fi genre, too, most notably Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Very silly, juvenile and actually quite bad in places - but nevertheless this is a lot of fun.

I really enjoy watching Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, but the style can be a bit crude at times. Steve Martin isn't exactly one for subtle jokes. This movie is a perfect example of how to make an Action Comedy. Witty, Cheeky, Daring(for it's time), Well paced.
