Mike Leigh has popped up throughout my adult life. I remember skiving university finals revision to see, "Life is Sweet', I watched "Secrets and Lies" at least three times, I saw "Career Girls" at a time when my life was falling apart and now one Saturday evening aged 40, I put on the DVD of "Happy-Go-Lucky".

Leigh is a Thomas Hardy for the suburbs. The gloom usually hangs heavily over his work, but Poppy provides light melancholy mixed with brightly-burning love. The flamenco scene shows how he has become the master of comedy, character and setting. Leigh can make a Tesco Express look romantic. I love the way he tells London stories, I'm fascinated by the roads, the rooms and the light. The dialogue is naturalistic but heightened ... Read More:

Watching this exquisitely funny and painfully true parade of suburban nightmares, I realised that I had met at least six 'Beverleys'. I had encountered the same pretentious, insensitive, overbearing, condescending and brutish mannerisms. Alison Steadman embodies the lot; an eyeball-searing vision in orange nylon with a voice that can scape wax out of your inner ear!

For much of the play, I laughed at Beverley's indulgent glee in 'welcoming' her guests and hectoring her husband. For the last twenty minutes, I was holding my hands to my face and muttering 'God, no! God, please no!' at every ghastly verbal brickbat and physical impasse. It makes me wonder if Ricky Gervais and his 'Office' crew had this on a loop. David Brent's manners seem almost ... Read More:

"Topsy Turvy" is more than just a "play within a play" although it works very well at that level. We see the genesis of Gilbert and Sullivan's best-known work "The Mikado" after the partnership has gone through a low spell, and get enough scenes from its staging (and that of other G & S "Savoy operas") to satisfy all but the keenest of Savoayards. We enjoy immensely the way in which the premiere is rehearsed and pulled together under Gilbert's dictatorial directorship. It is all very funny but there is a darker side in the world outside. The relationship between Gilbert and Sullivan and the efforts that the impresario D'Oyley Carte and his team have to make to keep them working together are very well set out and the niceties of class distinctions in Victorian ... This box set, along with Abigail's Party and Happy-Go-Lucky (both available separately), will give you a comprehensive - and comprehensively moving and hilarious - understanding of Mike Leigh's vision. He's always painted in broad strokes, with sometimes heavy-handed caricatures, but within those strokes are subtle moments of great emotional truth, and this set proves how versatile Leigh has been within different genres. A bargain and a treasure.

That's what this film is. I say small only because the whole subject is small - a small suburban family's daily existence. But from the moment they open their front door to us, we are reminded how extraordinary normal everyday families can be. The tone is bitingly satirical as it sends up some of the odder urban steroetypes of modern times. Without giving away these superb characters, Spall and Horrocks are hysterical and worryingly good in their roles. The Horrocks character in particular is a gem and is the real centrepiece around which this brilliantly crafted film rotates. I haven't seen a sharper or more satirical movie about British family life than this. Leigh at his best.

This Mike Leigh film is outstanding! I believe it was nominated for several awards at the Cannes film festival, and rightly so. David Thewlis plays Johnny, a complex anti-hero, which you love and loath in equal quantities. The dialogue is hilarious, witty, condescending and at times just plain mean.

The standout scene for me is when Johnny is invited into a security unit by a guard out of sympathy. Johnny then proceeds to destroy this poor man's hopes and dreams with a scathing philosophical monologue about our future as a human race. The supporting cast are equally good, in particular Greg Cruttwell as the nihilistic, vain and deeply shallow landlord. The music score is eerily compelling and haunting , and fits perfectly with the characters and scenery.

Excellent film set in the very bleak 50s. Imelda Staunton plays Vera Drake, a resolutely cheerful and kind lady whose world falls apart when it is found out that she has been carrying out backstreet abortions for years. As Vera's trial takes place towards the end of the film, there is no clear reason given as to why she helps "young girls in trouble" (as she would put it) but a distinct hint that, like many of the girls, she was sexually assaulted as a young woman.

Staunton is superb as the stoical then silent Vera and is excellently supported by Phil Daniels as her loyal husband and Alex Kelly as her painfully shy daughter among others. A powerful, thought-provoking film and historical insight, which is well worth seeing.

A marvellous film, one of Mike Leigh's best. Filmed in London - near Roman Road E3 and also in King's Cross - for the most part this is a compelling human portrayal of different sorts of decay, and the occasional human orchid that can rise from that compost. Marvellous performances from the actors playing the three central characters too, Shirley, Cyril and Cyril's mum.

Mike Leigh can always be counted on when it comes to presenting truthful, emotional and compelling British cinema. Over the past twenty years, he has progressed beyond the limitations of cosy teatime telly to present us with something that resonates with a sense of reality far more potent than that of our previous king of kitchen-sink despair, Ken Loach. When at his best, Leigh is a creator of honest and heartfelt, slice-of-life pictures that move effortlessly from scenes of warm humour, to moments of crippling despair; whilst always offering us a collection of characters that are viewed through the eyes of a central protagonist who, during the course of the film, undergoes a series of life shattering episodes that will eventually change their lives for better or worse. Given these characteristics, ... Read More:
