What is it about films like this? They're based on good source material and attract a good cast but when it finally makes it to the screen it seems as if the furniture is putting in a better performance.

With Possession you're left thinking that this was just another opportunity for Gwyneth to showcase her English accent and nothing more and even she's acting a bit like death warmed over.

There's the usual parade of familiar Brit thesps (Tom Hollander, Toby Stephens, Trevor Eve) all acting up a bit too much in tweeds and making Aaron Eckhart look by turns as if he's not making enough effort or everyone else is really hamming it up. Strangely, the scenes you'd think would be worst, ie the flashbacks to Victorian England ... Read More:

This The Shape Of Things sees writer/director Neil Labute adapting his own play, which is about what happens when annoying art school student Rachel Weisz meets annoying nerd Paul Rudd and a relationship ensues. Weisz sets about changing Rudd so he's less of a dweeb, while Rudd struggles with his feelings for old friend Gretchen Mol.

Now, this guy Labute is often accused of misogyny. Take his recent Wicker Man remake, for example, which is about an entire island of irritating and manipulative dolts who happen to be women. You'd have a good case there. This one, I think you can argue either way. It's certainly not a flattering portrait of a woman, but I also think that what cuts deepest about The Shape Of Things is that it's very honest. I have ... Read More:

I love this movie, it's utterly random. This is a real mix of genres, so it's hard to categorise - without it's fantastical elements, it definitely wouldn't work. Serious suspension of disbelief is required but if you can manage that, it's a great, mostly light-hearted movie, with a small amount of quite gruesome violence at the start, which sets the scene but is never carried through.

It's difficult to put 5 stars to such a movie. Not because it's not a good film, but because the reasons are different from any other reason why you would rate a film high.
In the Company of Men is NOT pleasant to watch. It's cruel, blunt, dark and above all, spot on in its portrayal of a real psychopath, a man with no conscience and no deep feeling. The snake-in-suit /charming / confident / slick type. The kind many women would be fooled by.
In the Company of Men tells the disturbing story of 2 successful men -- One, the psychopath. The other, his more human, but weak "friend". These snakes-in-suit, disappointed with their relationships with women, decide to take a general revenge on them, by selecting the most naive and uncorrupted girl they can find ... Read More:

I, unlike many, was not bowled over by LaBute's previous film 'In the Company of Men'- it didn't stand up as a whole film, it took its title from a David Mamet essay & had that misanthropic feel common to Todd Solondz's mostly mediocre oeuvre (exception 'Welcome to the Dollhouse'). 'Your Friends & Neighbours' continues in the same misanthropic, tired misogynistic manner- though the territory it covers is one that has been done to death in American cinema & literature: try 'Sexual Perversity in Chicago', most Philip Roth books, 'Manhattan', 'Crimes & Misdeameanours', 'Husbands&Wives' ,'The Corrections', 'Ravelstein' & aspects of the Campus novel (White Noise, Name of the World, Wonder Boys)- how many more times will we get a professor/lecturer having extra-curricular affairs? ...
