Where's the passion? Where's the drama? Bad casting of leading lady. The love of Bathsheba is something for which two men die. There was no reason for them to do so in this production! The leading me are OK but I'm sure would have come across better had they had acted opposite a better love interest, to bring them out of themselves. The story just plodded along with no feeling of time or events. The scenery and sets are good but all in all not worth watching. Stick to the original film with Julie Christie.

Impeccable acting. Speech and deportment faultless. How nice to be able to hear every word spoken, unlike some recent Austen adaptations, e.g. Kate Beckinsale and Keira Knightley, both of whom were far too 21st century slovenly.

This is an excellent series. The story lines are very good and frequently have a good twist at the end. The Scottish landescape is a beautiful backdrop to this series. The casting director has chosen well. Here is a series which combines pathos and comedy well. Not always an easy combination - tears in your eyes and laughter behind your smile.

I look forward to the release of series 2.

I thoroughly enjoyed this production - it is closer to Hardy's novel than the earlier version starring Julie Christie. Baeza's reading of Bathsheba Everdine is excellent, totally in character. She skillfully combines Bathsheba's independent spirit with both her youth and naivety. She is at all times consistent and convincing. In the Julie Christie version, Christie overplayed the role, moving away from Hardy's intention, and came close at times to trivialising the character. Also, she did not consistently capture the youthfulness and innocence of Bathsheba. The Everdine/Troy sword scene was also overplayed in the Christie version, including sequences that were not in the novel and which, quite honestly, reduced the emotional impact of this (very important) scene. ... This is wonderful stuff! I missed the series when originally aired on TV and I always had the feeling I'd missed something good. Well, good is an understatement. These are beautifully executed yarns with meticulous attention to period detail - but it's the gentle humour and wry observations of human behaviour that really set these stories apart from other 'tec stories. The ensemble acting, headed by Michael Gambon, is first rate and the pace of the plots perfect. Why were more episodes never made? A classic gem. I noticed that a US viewer complained about the poor image quality - I don't have a problem with the UK Region 2 version, maybe they're pressed from different sources.
