Recently at the school I work at they had this as their home-time story, which led me - a life-long Dahl fan - to re-read both The Witches and Matilda, my favourite Dahl books (as well as Danny the Champion of the World), and rent the movies.

It's said that Roald Dahl, by then close to the end of his life, cried when he saw this film of one of his best books (god knows what he might have thought of "Matilda"!). However for once I couldn't disagree with his assessment more - the film is richly comic, frighteningly fantastic and despite the fact that Luke has become an American kid (while all the rest of the characters are Norwegian or British - it would have been more believeable had Luke been English too as he was in the book), ... I endorse everything said by previous reviewers in acknowledging the power, beauty and sheer creepiness of this film classic, hence the 5 stars. Equally, I am appalled at this new DVD version that can offer such poor quality sound and would give it only 1 star if it were possible to rate the sound separately. The earlier release from Warner in 2002, though not brilliant sonically, is still preferable to this travesty. The message is - if you have the previous version, hang on to it. If you haven't, try to get one.

As for those who want to dismiss this movie in favour of the 'new horror' such as SAW or HOSTEL - all I can feel is pity for them. I am a long-standing fan and collector of the genre, going back to the silent classics, ... Read More:

'Walkabout' is an incredibly beautiful film and haunts you in a way almost beyond comprehension. The fact it is so subjective means it is a film to be revisited time and again. The only thing I can liken it's effect to is poetry. The lyrical nature of it, the stunning cinematography...I'd like to think that the entire meaning of the film can be tied up in the final scene where the character of Jenny Agutter loses herself in recollection- it has all the sense of sorrow for something lost that can never be found again, which is perhaps as good a summing up of the film as I can create.
Probably not for those who cannot stand 'meandering' or who like absolutism in films; for everyone else a hedonistic joy.

Performance has always been a highly underated film designated to cult status and really only of interest to Rolling Stones fans. And for the most part considered simply as "wierd" by anyone else who might be changing channels, the rare occasions it's shown on TV. But there is certainly potential for a great film in its' concepts and with the idea's it explores. The themes of cross gender and mixing of identity is way ahead of it's time. And if they'd had the technology we have today this would have worked very successfully. The sound track which includes music by Ry Cooder and others is really excellent, Memo from Turner is also a rare treat, not only one of the first music videos that was made, but probably the best song Mick Jagger ever wrote and performed ... what I could never figure out is that he could replicate anything many times over as is exemplified via his many wedding rings... So why didn't the authorities on his own planet say, "Ooh look, the water's running out. Shall we replicate some more or what?" Oh no, stop mythering, it'll be alright......?

This boxed set is not described here by Amazon, and that makes it impossible to know what the content is. In fact some of the same dvds are offered by Amazon separately, so if you do not know which episodes are in this set you may already have some (like I did when I purchased this) or you may order some on a duplicated basis in the same order. So beware. For your information I will list the content here so that you can avoid this problem.

This set (The Bible) is the largest TV-based movie ever undertaken, and not to be confused with other films also named "The Bible", some of which are also sold here on Amazon.

The stars here include Ben Kingsley, Gary Oldman, Richard Harris, Dennis Hopper, Oliver Reed, Sean Bean, Barbara Hershey, Jeremy Sisto, Michael Gambon, ... Read More:

There are of course films which are obviously serious because they are about war or social injustice but this film is serious and profound in a more universal sense that it deals with the conditions of life as such, on a very basic level, encompassing the extremes that can be experienced, and in this real life case were experienced, by one man. In other words it deals with the nature of existence itself. The image system of this film operates through the opposition of heat and cold and this derives naturally from the background story which is the true story of Harry Oakes the millionare starting out in the snow and ice of Alaska and ending in the tropical heat of the West Indies. Those who know Roeg's work will not be surprised to know that the story perfectly fits Roeg's underlying fascination ... Read More:

Hitchcock used an example to explain the difference between surprise and suspense. If people are seated at a table and a bomb explodes, that is surprise. If they are seated at a table, and you know there's a bomb under the table attached to a ticking clock, but they continue to play cards -- that's suspense. There's a bomb under "Dont Look Now" for excruciating stretches of time.

I was expecting this slow-moving movie to descend into routine shock and horror movie, but it doesn't. Most of the movie is all waiting, anticipating and dreading. The jolts that come about midway are of a similar magnitude to movies such as Sixth Sense or The Exorcist.

The film is slow moving, but it manages to expertly linger to create atmosphere, a sense of place, a sympathy with ... Read More:

I decided to buy this collection, in spite of the other reviews that described its poor video quality, so I have no right to complain. However, I wanted to add some specifics that the other reviewers did not mention. Far from being re-mastered, all four titles appear to have been taken from pre-existing transfers to analog tape. 'Far From the Madding Crowd' has the same scratches on it as on the VHS tape that I already owned. On top of this, these poor analog masters seem to have been digitally encoded in someone's garage using a cheap capture device and an old PC that someone found on a dump. The non-widescreen 'The Go-Between' seems to be from the same source as the DVD given away free by the Telegraph a while ago. The black-and-white titles have been so badly digitized that they look as though they ... Read More:

I remember watching this on tv and liking it so much I recorded it the next time it was on. I actually forgot about it until I started listening to Reiki music, and it somehow brought it back to me; it's now in my Wishlist.

It's basically about a masseuse (Brian Brown) and his relationship with his client (Mimi Rogers). But as the title suggests, this isn't really a sexually explicit film. In fact, sex hardly plays any part at all. Instead, we get an intense exploration of the soul and mind, hence "Full Body Massage". The film has barely 6 characters to its name; its main focus is both Mimi and Brian as they argue and challenge each other's ideas; exploring issues of spirituality, consciousness, happiness. Though it might seem a lame idea in these increasingly cynical times, I found the entire film ... Read More:
