This Tristan arrived with plenty of hype and is certainly about as good as one dare hope for in these times. The staging, although conceptual, is at least imaginative and visually striking without being completely foolish or haphazard. Yet,as is always the way with opera nowadays, there are annoying details, mannerisms, which will pall on repeated viewing.

Nina Stemme, it must be presumed, will blossom into the great Wagner soprano of this quarter of the new century. At the moment, her acting leaves a little to be desired. There is little sense of consuming passion, erotic love or transcendence in this performance. Her constant smirk during Marke's despair is truly painful to watch.

The tenor, Robert Gambill, looks ... Read More:

First off, Lehnhoff's production is going to seriously piss some people off but it is singularly one of themost exciting performances of Tosca I can recall seeing in years. Lehnhoffhas taken Puccini's "shabby little shocker" and done what many of us have been eternally waiting for - putting it over the top, right where it belongs. He has stripped the tale of its ornate baroque trappings and set it in what appears to be hell. For those who want read only about the musical performance - jump about half a dozen paragraphs.

Act 1's church is an enormous cavernous, foreboding place. Cavarodossi's Magdalene painting absolutely gargantuan on a highly raised platform that dominates the rear of the stage. Instead of rococo pillar and posts, ... Read More:

The intimacy of the old Glyndebourne stage works perfectly for this production by Lenhoff, bringing a chamber-like intensity to this powerful drama. Initial concerns about Roberta Alexander's suitability for the title role soon melt away as you get caught up in her heart-rending performance; she brings a reality to the role which is often overlooked in performance - this is a real woman with desires and hopes, not some operatic 'grande dame'. All the more devastating is her Act II portrayal at the loss of her baby son - and yet her forgiveness and love make you cry again at the end of Act III, with some of Janacek's most burnished orchestration; how can an opera as dark and as tragic as this have such a hopeful and uplifting ending? Most of the cast ... Read More:

Richard Wagner - Lohengrin

Lehnhoff's complete re-interpretation of Wagner's legend opera into a modern psychological drama is a magnificent success, and for the first time I have been able to appreciate the wondeful score.

The settings are of the sparse architectural type with high banks of steps rearranged as the drama proceeds, against this plain background the emotions and conflicts are sharply etched.

All four principals are simply superb, Vogt with his light voiced tenor giving an ideal otherworldly sense of the mystery of Lohengrin, and Kringelborn embodies Elsa, both singers being sufficiently mature vocally but still young enough to be visually ideal, they are totally believable in their relationship.

Parsifal - Wagner [2005]

Nikolaus Lenhoff has excelled himself in this production, retaining a traditional atmosphere in the stage sets and costumes but adding modern overtones, the asteroid embedded in the monastery wall, the bullet holes in the stonework, debris, and the knights clad in shabby uniforms reminiscent of trench warfare in WW1.

The Gurnemanz of Matti Salminen is a wise traditionalist holding the disparate characters together, with Waltraud Meier giving extraordinary depths to the enigmatic Kundry.

Christopher Ventris as Parsifal takes us through the journey from pure fool to enlightenment. Also his new knowledge is the catalyst for a transition from past to a new future, symbolised by Parsifal and Kundry ... Read More:

Silja was 55 when this Glyndebourne performance was video-taped, and in 2003 she was still singing Herodias at the Paris Bastille Opera, in an accoladed production of Salome. Will her career ever end, one wonders, or is she planning on going the way of Emilia Marty, the protagonist of this work, once a rarity in opera stages but nowadays thankfully far less so? For here we are in presence of an outstanding rendition of the work, from the hands of a veteran long acquainted with it and very much responsible for the opera's rescue from oblivion. Her voice appears to still have a lot to say, despite some wobble at the top register, I'd say with no disrespect natural at this stage in her career. It's like drinking now a 1976 Chateau Mouton Rothschild that has been well preserved: ... Read More:
