I recently saw two films directed by Norah Ephron. This one and Sleepless in Seattle (1993). Both have held up remarkably well. Curious to know the background (if any) to You've Got Mail, I did a little research. Its basic plot can be traced back to Nikolaus Laszlo's play The Shop Around the Corner which was adapted in a film of the same name directed by Ernest Lubitsch in 1940, co-starring Margaret Sullavan and James Stewart. Then in 1949, it was recycled as a musical (re-named In the Good Old Summertime) co-starring Judy Garland and Van Johnson. What we have here is the latest version of Laszlo's original story, brought to the screen again with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan in the lead roles. In fact, Hanks and Ryan had appeared previously ... Tom Hanks (Big) stars as Sam, a single parent. A year after losing his wife, he is struggling with the loss and to help him, his son Jonah phones a radio station to ask for advice, and Annie from Baltimore hears and knows she must meet up with Sam.

Filled with plenty of romantic conventions, Nora Ephron's 1993 romantic drama creates a light hearted feel good film, with funny and dramatic moments for viewers of all ages.

Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan (When Harry met Sally), in their first collaboration, are perfect in their respective role, especially Ryan who is very funny, where as Hanks takes the more serious roles, which he is always perfect at.

But the actor who steals the show is Ross Maligner, who is exceptional ... Read More:

Far better than this meagre release would indicate. Solid performances from everyone, a clever story with a few twists and it's nice to see an unashamedly feel good movie that manages to end without ladling on the syrup factor.

It has been shown on UK TV by Channel 4 in widescreen, so why the R1 1.33 only vanilla release?

We demand a decent DVD release. I'd replace mine like a shot for a good widescreen transfer with a few insights from cast and crew into the making. Some of the scenes out in the countryside on their car journey just scream out for the open vista of widescreen.

And careful not be a spoiler, but I'd love to know whether the need to have main cast members releasing feathers from their pockets at ... Read More:

Im sorry, but for a romantic comedy, this was absolutely dreadfull.
I was literally sat there throughout the movie, sitting there thinking COME ON MAKE ME LAUGH!!! I didnt once!

I was also really very disappointed by the way this movie wasted the best actress in the movie Kristin Chenoweth. She didnt get anywhere near enough screen time!

A very very boring and disappointing movie!

A madcap, wacky comedy about a suicide hotline service where the only ones needing real help are the staff!

Mixed Nuts is a story about people. Very disturbed people. Here is the lowdown on what's going on Christmas eve in California: Phillip runs a suicide hotline called "Lifesavers" out of an old apartment building. His staff consists of the crotchety Mrs. Munchnik and the meek, insecure Catherine. While they aren't making any money, they are keeping track of the lives they save (on a board not unlike the McDonalds "4 billion served" sign). After they're given an eviction notice by their mean-spirited land lord the hot line workers think they've hit rock bottom... but that's before they converge with a wild and wacky assortment of folks including a ...
