I was nearly put off buying this film as it seems that some of the reviewers don't think it quite as good as the series. However, I have now bought it and think it is brilliantly made, very funny and a wonderful film to put by for a quiet moment during the Christmas holidays when the TV listings are disappointing or for a rainy Sunday afternoon. My children love it, my parents love it, we love it - so nice to be able to sit down to a film together as a family.

Unlike the series which is set in Britain parts of this film are of the Germans plotting their invasion from the other side of the Channel. The juxtapositioning of the German preparedness and the British unpreparedness is priceless. You will recognise some plots from ... Read More:

Having seen 'The London That Nobody Knows' as a support ( I suppose I could just as easily have bought a truss) many moons ago ( Too many to painlessly recall ), I just had to have it when it came out on DVD; why?
Who knows, having thrashed around the dingier parts of London at that time I surmise that I may just be wallowing in nostalgia - fun isn't it?
I wholeheartedly agree with the other reviewers comments, although it appears to me that James Mason, at times, looks decidedly ill-at-ease, nonetheless it's worth every penny to see what we have lost.

As for 'Bicycles', just what is it all about? If it is meant to be allegorical, sorry but the allegory is lost on me (Nothing new there then), and what is an unaccompanied ... Read More:

Alf Garnet has to be one of the strongest British sit-com characters of all time. The fact that he was no more than a strong version of many real life Alf Garnets always gave him a bit more weight over some of the more cartoonish characters in sit-com land. So, not only was Alf responsible for making the TV show TDUDP one of the longest running sit-coms in history, but he sort of was rsponsible for it being so one dimensional and a bit claustraphobic feeling because of Alf's tiny world.

But boy, is Alf a character that lingers in the memory! I put this film on and I was pretty staggered at how fresh his character still was, or timeless looking. It has to be, I thought, because characters like that still do exist, and probably always will. Maybe ... Read More:

In their time these movies were huge at the UK box office. Cheaply made, astonishingly unerotic and almost painfully unfunny, It really shows up how grim the early 70s must have been if people flocked to the cinemas to seek light relief in this dreck.

Anyway, you know the drill. Personable simpleton Timothy Lea, sporting a tasty selection of crushed velvet loon pants and enormously-collared slimfit nylon shirts, gets a new job with his brother in law Sid which inevitably leads to some hilarious swanee-whistle style slapstick and emcounters with sexy young ladies, usually at the same time.

From a modern viewpoint, the films work on several levels. One can revel in their sheer awfulness, of course, but they also serve as invaluable social ... Read More:

If you're a Milligan obsessive and this is going cheap second hand, it is probably worth a punt for the fleeting moments when Spike appears playing his own father. Otherwise take heed of the other review and avoid. If you want to see Spike onscreen most other DVDs available are funnier. If you want to engage with Milligan's humane and hilarious insights into the war; read the book that inspired this insipid film. The frustrating thing this late in the day is that Milligan's memoirs are - if anything - more needed now the WW2 generation is dying out and shattered veterans are returning from other insane battles to uncertain futures. It's time for an edgier script and an ambitious director to get together and give Milligan's memoir the movie it deserves.

I saw this film in England several years ago (I hadn't even heard about the tv serial) and I enjoyed it thoroughly. I've been hoping to find it on dvd ever since. Last night I ended up discussing the film with an English mate of mine in a Brussels bar, and he told me the film is now banned in Britain, because it's not p.c. I sincerely hope this is not the case. The film never shocked me and it did NOT turn me into a racist.

The rather luke-warm other review nearly put me off this film, but I'm glad I went ahead and bought it. Yes, it's corny and I hadn't realised that a heavy reliance on slapstick, custard pies in the face, and much falling or being pushed into the pool carried on so late in the comedy world. Still funny in places though, and so refreshingly innocent and non-P.C.
Another bonus with the latter factor is that some very, er, tasty young females get their kit off, and even the lovely Liz Fraser, who must by then have been 44 years old, puts in a tantalising but not nude appearance. Much less laboured and more fun than Confessions of a Driving Instructor, even if that contains a couple of positively smouldering appearances by the delectable Liz referred to earlier.
