Platoon is a cinematic classic from Director Olive stone. And is supposedly his auto-biography of his experiences in Vietnam as a G.I. The characters in this film are based on real-soldiers he met in his 'platoon' in Vietnam.

I'm highly recommending the Special Edition for a feature documentary on the 'making of platoon' which is the best feature I've ever seen on a DVD to date. It shows how Oliver Stone put the cast through hell and back whilst shooting in the jungle. Plenty of accounts from Charlie Sheen, a young Johnny Depp, and Elijah Woods on how much they grew to hate Oliver Stone, which is exactly what he wanted!. A must see.

Fantastic film as we all know, but the quality is not worth paying for a Bluey. Get the DVD at a fraction of the cost, it's just as good.

what a wasted opportunity. what a waste of money. what a waste of Angie jolie in gorgeous ancient greek attire with the snakes and all.
Begin at the end. Good idea Olie ! not. Tell the story in a series of flashbacks. Dead clever, Dead literary, dead movie results.
Don't let's start on the irish accents. Bad idea. Twittering leprechaun Alexander the midget wit de mophead trying to be DEEP at the end of every scene. I wouldn't follow this demigod to the village pub never mind accross THE KNOWN WORLD.
No No this is not a sword and sandal greek tragedy more a hollywood flip flop on a gigantic scale.
Two characters really. Him and his mum, mum and him. The rest as portable scenery, who cares. No narrative drive, no convincing emotional dynamo ... Read More:

So far I've tended not to review films I haven't enjoyed. I find it hard to be inspired enough to write when I didn't engage or feel fulfilled at the end of a film (or even a music or book) experience. Sadly Nixon is one of the few films I've really not enjoyed and have given such a low star rating to. I know the period and subject relatively well, having studied it at college and reading around American politics since, and it is here where the film redeems itself; the research seems fairly well done. Unfortunately, considering the amazing cast assembled, I found many performances very dry and lack lustre. I just didn't engage or relate to any of them enough to care about the story. The direction was pretty good, as to be expected from Oliver Stone, but the constant flicking ... Read More:

What do you get if you mix together a cliched idea, a mismatched cast and a poor director? Unfortunately the result is Natural Born Killers, an awkward blip in cinema history. Unashamedly ripping off the classic story of Bonnie and Clyde the film follows the rise and fall of the "charasmatic" serial killers awkwardly portrayed by failed popstar Juliette Lewis and "star" of cheers Woody Harrelson. Far from being a terrifying insight like Henry portrait of a serial killer this storyline is a spectacular flop. The characters are impossible to like and re-enforce the worst stereotypes about working class Americans. Failed homages to films are obvious, out of place and pretentious. The attempt to replicate Film Noir in an early scene only serves to remind the viewer that they could be watching ... Read More:

This really is as bad as people say!
TV movie quality at best, totally unconvincing, completeleley detached - try the far better UNITED 93 for the sheer terror and inevitability. This may well be Stone & Cage's worst film.
Just does not convince and feels more like a VERY bad Hollywood Disaster movie, in which case you may as well watch The Towering Inferno!
As a serious docu drama it's a miserable failure.

I have watched Platoon more than any other war movie. So much so that I've had to give it a rest over the last few years.
Why is it so good?
Perhaps because it is the most realistic (certainly Vietnam) war movie ever made. Its based on Oliver Stones own experiences in Vietnam. Now I doubt whether there were actually two so clearly good and bad characters, as represented by Willem Dafoe and Tom Beringer in the film, but it is the spark between these two that creates much of the films atmosphere.
There are quite a few scenes in this film, such as when the Charlie Sheen character wakes up in the middle of the night (in the jungle), that are wonderfully done. You really get an idea of just how scary being a soldier might be.
I'm also sure that the film would not not have been as ... Read More:

DVD : JFK - Special Edition Directors Cut (2 Disc Edition) [1991]
Why does the film JFK work? It confirms what most people know to be the truth. That JFK was assassinated by a conspiracy. Whether Clay Shaw was involved or not may never be known but just because there has never been a confession by the powers that be doesnt mean the majority of the ordinary people are silly. (You cannot shoot someone in the back of the head for the head to go backwards. Thats just silly. Its so obvious to the eye that the second shot was fired from the front. The magic bullet theory was also silly. How can a bullet cause so much damage to two men and still look pristine? What happened to the president's brain? Where did it disappear when it was meant to be examined to get the bullet trajectory? Why was a proper autopsy not conducted? How could the chief suspect be killed in a building ... Read More:

With Salvador, regarded as Oliver Stone's debut proper (ignoring The Hand), Stone set the framework for his entire career thus far (with the possible exception of World Trade Center, which I have not yet seen).

Salvador is raw, urgent, politically bold (especially when it was made in the Reagan era of Rambo and Top Gun), visually stylish and forcefully well written. James Woods delivers a career-best performance which is even more impressive considering that he's made films such as Once Upon a Time in America and Casino (and that one with Sylvester Stallone that was a crock of crap).

This is a great film that fully deserves its place in the Oliver Stone repertoire, so add it to your collection now... NOW! For some excellent background reading, try Noam Chomsky's Deterring Democracy.
