Watch out!

I bought this edition after reading the "Amazon.co.uk Review" above, where it says "On the DVD: Citizen Kane in this DVD special edition is beautifully remastered and comes with a feature illustrating the before and after of the restoration process. A 50-minute documentary, 'Anatomy of a Classic', hosted by Barry Norman, delves into the making of the film..." etc.

Big mistake: Nothing of the description of the DVD is true! The review is written about a completely different edition of the film, not this one.

The original film is a masterpiece, but this edition is certainly not!

Touch of Evil opens with what must be one of the finest sequences ever but after that I found the film to be slow in places and marred by some overacting. The story is that of a Mexican police officer ( Heston ) and a corrupt US Cop ( Welles ) and how they clash and compete with regards to a murder. Heston does portray a moral upright man very well, it is just a pity that he could not portray a Mexican moral upright man that well - he is not very convincing. Welles completely overacts, as do a lot of his cop cronies who like to pontificate on things every once in a while. It is a shame that Marlene Dietrich appears for only a few minutes as her character is intriguing, but she flits in and out. The story tends to meander a little and could have done ... Read More:

Coming straight from a viewing of The Third Man, one of my all time favourites, and a great performance from Welles, The Lady From Shanghai was a bit of a dissappointment. Welles's acting is the foremost problem. It's as if he was unsure of what to make of the character, where to place him so to speak. Welles who would usually steal the whole scene with the tiniest gesture, here struggles to get involved in his character and give it any sort of real life and consistence.
The other problem is the flow of the movie. Apparently an hour was cut, much to Welles's dismay, and it certainly left the movie very disjointed at places.
Why should you give it a view, then? Well, for one thing the three other principal characters all have something ... Read More:

I don't know what one of the other (two) reviewers has been watching.....but take it from me the quality of picture/sound on this disc is impressive. I watched this again last night and the film remains one of my favourites, and all the more so for the transfer to DVD which is quite acceptable. Stunningly shot, wonderful sets, great lighting and acting that will take your breath away. Cotten and Moorehead are simply wonderful, and there are other great peformances also from an impressive cast. This disc has been available at a 'knock down' price for some time now and includes 'An Unfinished Masterpiece' which is an interview with film critic/author Bill Krohn that is well worth watching. Sometimes you just have to sit back and enjoy the film, and in the absence of ... Read More:

the sets are surreal, absolutely perfect, welles gets to grips fully with shakes masterpeice, to me this is easily welles greatest acting, to me no other macbeth film comes even close, probably the one with john finch is a reasonable apprentice. the horror and evil are given full reign, some of the greatest ever moments of film, the camerawork is a work of art in itself,. i cannot understand some reveiwers moaning about the restoration it seems perfect. i have almost worn out my copy i have watched it so many times

+ Great film!!!
+ MOC did a good job with this package!

- no english subtitles... As a non-native Speaker, I got to admit, that I didn't understand every word of Orsons verbal escapades.

So long.

'The Trial' is a wonderful film; however, the film presented here is a re-edited version which omits the eerie (and arguably crucial) opening scene, featuring Kafka's Parable of the Law read by Orson Welles. The picture quality on this disc is excellent, and the documentaries included are interesting, but the film itself is incomplete.

Cheaper versions present the film in full, but with muddy visuals and muffled sound; the 2004 Studio Canal edition has a running time of 113 minutes to this version's 110, so may contain the complete film. I'm going to try that one next...

A great film has been ruined by changing the aspect ratio to widescreen. Actors lose the tops of their heads and the picture looks a bit fuzzy to me. But to make matters even worse, on the copy I got the sound wasn't in synch with the picture, rendering it virtually unwatchable. It went in the bin the next day. Buyer beware!
