This is a pretty good film in some ways but in others it's confusing.
The back of the box tells you that Uncle Gabriel has died and for Ernie to inherit he must spend the night in the family home.
But this is all wrong, at the reading of the will Ernie gets nothing and he must stay in the family home as it's in the middle of nowhere and there's no trains or transport home till the morning. Then the Murders start. It's a bit like a dry run for an early Carry On Film, as it starts serious, very much like an Agatha Christe thriller, but then Kenneth Conner over acts (as usual) in it. Sid James just plays his usual self (here called 'Honest Sid') and Shirley Eaton just wanders about, I won't mention how bad Dennis Price is.

This DVD is a gem. It consists of a total of 10 short or shortish stories on 3 discs, originally separate films from the late 1940's. Some are from Somerset Maugham, a few from or adapted by other writers. At least two ( The Verger and The Colonel's Lady) were later recycled into the (also recommended and on DVD) Tales of the Unexpected series of the late 70's and early 80's. The black and white is crisp and clear as can be, the sound likewise. The acting is superb, too, with many famous names appearing, not least Nigel Patrick.

Each film of the three (Trio, Quartet, Encore) is introduced by Somerset Maugham from his beautiful home and garden on the Riviera. How glamorous that must have seemed, looked at from the dingy squalor of ... Read More:

Taking into account the story was filmed with little budget, it is a really good effort! I didn't think it was scary but it did have it's tense moments. Certainly worth watching but such ashame Christina Gregg did not pursue an acting career.

Roger Moore was the most successful and popular James Bond of all time and "The Saint" DVD gives you the chance to watch him in the guise of Simon Templar. With 39 episodes to watch, and yes I know it is very much dated, but well worth viewing if you want to escape temporarily into the past. For those seeking to create a little bit of TV Heaven (as well as get away from substandard television output) by attempting to recapture some of its better moments, this is a must not just for older viewing fans but everyone who wants some quality viewing with good story lines, some suspense and a decent plot. Today we take colour television for granted and some may think that watching programs in black and white is boring. Don't be put off that it's black and ... Read More:

Was I unlucky or did this particular version of this film carry a muffled sound quality. I originally copied this from TV and the sound was excellent, but always preferring to get the pucker video, I later saw this version, and was dismayed at the result. Needless to say I got rid of it, kept my TV copy, and have been reluctant to try and get another copy for the reason I have explained. Can anyone else throw some light on this? Having said all that, it really is a very good film of it's type and I agree very much with what my fellow reviewers have to say about it
