This film could in time become a classic in its genre. Both poignant and atmospheric. A veritable Greek tragedy. Two men, a lonely, retired teacher and an aging burnt out gangster, with a whimsical longing to change places with each other and inhabit each other's lives.

Johnny Hallyday, with his powerful, brooding visage, as you've never seen him. (No longer the aging rock star fearing the loss of his youth), but a dark, intense, taciturn figure. He has neither the energy or the committment to give to his career of crime. A lifetime of being on the run seems to have come to an end when he gets off the train at a characterless little town. He is befriended by a shy, retirng teacher (brilliantly played by Jean Rochefort)and ... Read More:

She: Suicidal, about to jump off a bridge. He: A carnival knife thrower. Would you like to be my target, he asks. Sounds like a match made in heaven.

Patrice Leconte's La Fille sur le Ponte may be a bit of quirky romantic fluff, but its great fluff. It's a diverting entertainment without much purchase, thank goodness, for the admiration of deeper meanings with which some Anglo cinephiles deaden the experience of good French movies.

It's the story of two people who probably could only exist in the movies. Adele (Vanessa Paradis) is 21, endlessly compliant and endlessly unlucky in love (and with just about everything else, too.) She's a charming gamin, especially if you're the guy trying to pick her up. "Boys attract me," she says, ... Read More:

"My Best Friend" is an amiable but somewhat dull barely humourous French film starring Daniel Auteuil as an antiques dealer who is seeking a best friend after being told that he doesnt have any friends by some business acquaintances. He hires a taxi driver to help him make friends only for the taxi driver to gradually become the best friend he is seeking. The film climaxes with the taxi drivers appearance on the French "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire " show with Auteuil helping him in the "Phone a Friend" section. All fairly forgettable stuff.

I found this film incredibly disapointing. There are so many superb French Films but this is not one of them. Why have the Hitchcock style music building suspense throughout the entire film, when nothing actualy happens. It^s not a thriller, or a comedy. The trouble is there is virtualy no story at all.! A woman goes into a tax mans office thinking it^s a therapists. She tells him she is unhappy married. Then abruptly leaves. She keeps returning for 5-10 minutes each week to continue complaining- very dull. He doesn^t tell her that he^s a tax man until several sessions have passed, but she still continues to keep visiting. . Then at the end she says she^s ended the marrige and is moving away. He is so desperately lonely he follows her. And that^s it. Boring story, boring dialog. ... Read More:

Ridicule is a French film which takes place in 1783, a few years before Louis XVI lost the ability to wear a hat; where "...in this country, vices are without consequence, but ridicule can kill." The film is about the effect of wit and word play on people's lives and careers. Malicious, mannered and highly enjoyable. Charles Berling, Jean Rochefort, Bernard Giraudeau and Fanny Ardant are excellent. A man would be a fool not to want to bed Ardant, and even more a fool to trust her.

The film is sumptuously mounted and the DVD transfer does it justice. The dialogue is so clever a knowledge of French might be in order, but the English subtitles do a superb job of conveying the witty, cruel, self-serving word play.

I found this a surprising film. It largely takes place in a small barber's shop. The main theme is the genesis and fulfillment of a lonely man's sexual fantasy of being married to a hairdresser, but the story is told in an unusual mixture of interactions with customers, exuberant dance scenes and sensual love-making. It is very funny most of the time, tempered with some sadness. Recommended.

This is a short tragedy about mis understanding. Perfectly told.

It's fascinating that the person who made this film, and i believe the main actor mainly did comedy prior to this. There are no evil characters, each one uses the other in some way. And there is genuine affection. But the mis understanding between Hire and his neighbor Pierette has devastating consequences.

You do not need to speak French to watch this film, or even subtitles. The story is told visually to a haunting Brahms soundtrack. It is quite stylised. But the acting, particular Hire who is a perplexing figure, draws you in. The performances are very human, jaw dropping at times. Not contrived like in Delicatessen.

It's my Favorite French film, and if it was not so tragic, could be my favorite ... Read More:
