I have to say that I am astonished to see how poorly this film is rated by many other reviewers.

I've read a Jane Austen or two, but not Mansfield Park. Consequently, when I saw this film for the first time I thought it was great, and I still do because I still haven't read the book.

It's clear from reading the many other reviews that the makers of this film have greatly upset the Austen purists by substantially altering the story and characters and bringing in non-original elements such as the references to slavery, which anyone could guess was where the family money must have come from.

I saw the movie first on an airliner to the US. that was the fastest flight I have ever been on. Time Flew. Then I bought it. It gives a wonderful description of how life challenges can be seen and solved. To me it is like a schoolbook.

This is simply more than just a 'lesbian' film. There's a subtley in the way the film explores different themes including sexuality, religion, convention and also opportunity. While at times beautiful and visually enriching, the metaphors used in the film shouldn't be lost on the viewer, and these play a significant part in helping to explore deeper undercurrents among the protagonists. Thoughtful, sensitive and honest this film does not pander to merely one group of society.

These are 3 very different tales each with their own gentle charms.

The most outstanding of the 3 has to be Emma. On its own it scores higher than the whole collection. This delightful version sees Ms Paltrow working hard on a convincing english accent and winning. It is a beautiful tale of a young woman who is so wrapped up in organising the love lives of others that she fails to notice her own. The actors work together well to provide a beautiful feel-good period drama that keeps much of the gentle humour from the novel and moves fast enough to entertain all but the most die-hard period drama spoil-sports. The only slight on the movie was the miscasting of the gorgeous Ewan MaGreggor. Fantastic as he is, he didn't work in this. But it does not interfere with the overall charm ... Read More:
