DVD : Centennial: The Complete Series (REGION 1) (NTSC)
As a rule, mini series have aspired to the label `epic'. By having starrier cast names, bigger sets, and of course more worldwide locations. This early mini series from the late 70's did something different - it kept the same location - the fictional town of Centennial, and charted the creation and evolution of the land and then the town, and the people that came and had an impact. So instead of the characters being large and the locations serving to tell us about the characters, the people are the ephemeral ones, passing through and hoping to leave their stamp on history. It's typical Michener in its style, and works perfectly in the mini series format - elegiac, rather than just epic.
So the story unfolds over 26 hours of TV of a ... Read More:

DVD : V - The Series - Vol. 1 - Episodes 1, 2 and 3 [1985]
Two years after the original mini series, and a year after the second mini series, The Final Battle, the third and final instalment of V began its run in 1985. Following on from the events of the final battle, the red dust bacteria has killed many of the Visitors, with those surviving escaping the Earth in the vast motherships. Meanwhile, Diana the Visitor leader has managed to escape the resistance.
Unfortunately this follow up is not as entertaining as its predecessors, and over the course of 19 hour length episodes, the series rapidly decreased in quality. The man who devised V, Kenneth Johnson, left the production after the first series, staying he was unhappy with the budget cuts that were to be imposed on subsequent episodes. By the third ... DVD : Mission Impossible - 5 - Wheels / The Ransom [1966]
The first episode, Wheels, is quite poor, I would give it one star. It really is a dull, slow story with little to commend it. The whole concept of it fails and its execution is laughable.

The tape is worth getting for the second episode, Ransom. Dan Briggs is not on a mission, instead he is forced into helping a gangster. Briggs must use the resources of the IMF to help the gangster kidnap a witness against him, but must also find a way to turn the tables.

5.Crime Story - Volume 6 - The Final Chapter [1988] starring: Dennis Farina, Anthony Dennison, Diahnne Abbott, David Abrams
directed by: Colin Bucksey, Paul Krasny

DVD : Mission Impossible - 6 - Elena / Zubrovnik's Ghost [1966]
In Elena, the IMF must investigate the strange behaviour of an agent working for the US government. It has its moments, but again the story is quite weak.

A ghost story, Zubrovnik's Ghost, sees the IMF emplying all sorts of trickery to convince the wife of a murdered man that her husband was murdered and that she should not trust his "so-called" friends (the true murderers). However, it seems that something else is going on much to the surprise of the IMF team. A reasonable episode.

DVD : Mission Impossible - 8 - The Short Tail Spy / The Legacy [1966]
The first episode allows Barbara Bain to turn in a fine performance as Cinnamon. While the episode does keep you guessing right through to the end, there is little to comment it. Its a dull story in which the team must discredit an assassin and the organisation he works for.

In the second episode, Legacy, the team must infiltrate a group of Nazis who are trying to track down Nazi gold. Each of the group has in his possession a code and when combined the completed code reveals the location of the gold. Since the IMF do not know where the code is hidden they must play it close to find out about the code before the Nazis complete their map. A so-so episode.

DVD : Mission Impossible - 7 - The Trial / The Carriers [1966]
In Trial, the IMF must usurp a show trial by a foreign government designed to make a mockery of the Western World. An enjoyable episode it is built on a slightly shaky premise and also features a slightly silly scene involving a bust, a lamp and a record turnstyle.

The highlight of the tape is The Carriers, in which the IMF infiltrate a group of trainee spys at a training camp. It transpires that the enemy intend to unleash a disease in America - can the team put a stop to their plans? An excellent episode with some wonderful moments and an interesting plot device (the "foiled" plan) which would be used time and again in the series.

10.Dallas: The Complete Seventh Season [1978] (REGION 1) (NTSC) starring: James Brown, Joanna Cassidy, Pat Colbert, Barry Corbin, Joel Fabiani
