Although I enjoyed this film I'd have to say that an awful lot is sacrificed to DDL's acting. The fact that what everyone talks about is his performance says it all really. He is fantastic, but that's largely due to the fact that nobody else seems to get a word in edgeways.Paul Dano does his best, but like every other character he pops in and out of the film without any great rhyme or reason. There are a few faults, like other reviewers, I was confused for a long time by Dano playing identical twin brothers and there are other elements of the film that are confusing.Dano's congregation grows without the town ever seeming to, and the religous elements are only introduced in short, sharp bursts. But none of this really matters because the film is ... Read More:

There Will Be Blood is without a doubt one of the best films I have seen all year and also one of the best films I have laid my eyes on! The plot of the film is about a prospector called Daniel Plainview (Played by Mr Day-Lewis) Plainview is working with a team of men on a primitive oil well. One of his workers is killed in an accident, and Plainview takes the man's orphaned child as his own. His successes allow him to expand his enterprise, and he negotiates for new leases with a sales pitch that he is family man with a family business with his son, H.W., as his partner. Plainview soon gets a tip off to the presence of oil in Little Boston, California. Plainview and H.W. travel there and find oil seeping to the surface of the ground and attempt to ... Read More:

Really poor. The story line is dull. I could not see what the point of the film was. There were no major "themes" raised. Apparently the novel it is based on shows the ugly side of the oil industry / American capitalism. This doesnt really come across either.

With Daniel Day Lewis, they had the perfect actor to play a vile, capitalist monster but even he disappoints. The other reviewer hit the nail on the head. His acting is overly self-indulgent, all shouty and over dramatic (a bit Pacino-esque). The "overacting vein" in the middle of the forehead frequently pops out. As for the Best Actor Oscar, this was given out of guilt for not giving it for Gangs of New York, because this performance is overly thespy, and because the film itself is an ... Read More:

Ok before i start my review of this movie/DVD please note that the comments other people have made about the aspect ration being messed up are wrong! I found no problem what so ever with this disc and there was certainly no "oogie Nights" at the start!
Now onto the movie....
This film rightly deserves to be called a classic. Why? Becuase it's unique. There have been a few imitations (Wonderland is one) but non have ever come close to the sheer power and honesty of this movie. Many people see the porn industy as glamour and non stop partying. But as this movie proves there is much more to it. These people have lives and, just like you and i, they have problems. The film starts off charting the rise to fame of "Dirk Diggler" the new boy in the porn ... Read More:

This is Adam Sandler's most interesting film to date. It's a dark comedy with excellent acting from the entire cast. Its well written with subtle and dark humour, but judging by some of Adam Sandler's previous movies and by reading some of the reviews on Amazon; it appears that this film is too intelligent for the fans of Adam Sandler.

If your expecting the usual Adam Sandler movie, like the terrible Happy Gilmore, then you will be disapointed. However, if you like your comedy dark and subtle; then this is for you. This is a very acomplished film.

Sandler plays a man suffering with mental issues resulting from being brought up surrounded by 7 sisters. Although he runs his own business he is socially backward and struggles in the company ... Read More:

Just seemed to me like a load of episodes of a soap opera condensed into one. Lots of rather meaningless plots, some maybe even interwoven.
A lot of people seem to like this film, but a warning to the rest of you, it is like that film 'Crash', the one with Sandra Bullock in it. No plot, no story, just interminable.

Some people have said that those who don't like this film are "thickies", and only like Die Hard etc., well you are entitled to your opinions, what a pity you don't have any respect for any other peoples' opinions when they don't coincide with your own.

DVD : Hard Eight [1997] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
This is also known as "Sydney" (director Paul Thomas Anderson's original title) after the name of the movie's central character, a somewhat mysterious casino gambler (and murderer, by the way) played by veteran Philip Baker Hall. The new and more commercially-viable title comes from the game of craps in which the dice player can roll an eight with a six and a two or with a five and a three or with two fours. Since probabilistically the hardest way to roll an eight is with two fours, that's called a "hard eight." Such a choice occurs twice in the movie, and symbolically a "hard eight" may represent the gambler's psychology.

Co-starring as Sydney's protege is John C. Reilly as John Finnegan, a kind of loveable schmuck who falls in love with a Reno waitress/prostitute named Clementine, ... Read More:
