This first and most faithful adaptation of Lord of the Flies is hindered by Peter Brook's decision to cast for looks rather than acting ability with his cast of child actors. While sometimes the two are more or less compatible - James Aubrey's Ralph and Tom Chapin's Jack in particular - there's no doubting that Hugh Edwards' Piggy is the kind of kid probably likely to be bullied more for his clumsy line readings than his weight. The first couple of reels are particularly awkward as you take time to acclimatise to the performances, but once the two groups start to split and order starts to turn into frenzied anarchy the film truly taps into the terror of the novel surprisingly well.

This is Lear in a completely different light from any other version, I think that much can be guaranteed. Whether or not you like it probably depends on how orthodox you are in terms of Shakespeare, but as for me, I find I prefer this version to, say, the much praised Michael Hordern one. This is lean, mean Lear, stark and brooding and focusing very much more on the psychology than on outwardly events. I find that I think of it as the essence of the play. It's intense, even intrusive in its psychological examination of the characters, and the title role is made even more demanding because of it. Only an actor of Scofield's calibre could pull it off, and he does so in what must be the greatest performance of his film career.

DVD : Lord Of The Flies [1963]
Worthy restoration edition of this mostly forgotten film, with extras and director commentary. There's a whole generation who have never read the book or seen the film, unless it's on their GCSE topics list. Look around and see what's happening in inner cities today and you realise that this film is more relevant now than when it came out in '63. Don't blame the production team for the choppy editing or limited character development; that was the fault of the distributors who wanted a 90 minute film, not the two hours the director intended. It would be impossible to make a film as close as this to the book now. Don't even look at the '93 remake, its hopeless.

DVD : Marat/Sade [1966] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
The play by Peter Weiss was "important", but that is no guarantee that it might be worth watching, rather the opposite. However this film version is quite one of the most stunning films ever made. The visuals are fantastic (not least the very young Glenda Jackson), the acting is quite superb and the music quite amazing. It is a disgrace that the VHS is only available as NTSC, and this DVD only as Region 1. (However, the DVD is a very great improvement on the VHS: you can, for a start, actually read the small print with which the film opens.)
