While not quite as "grand" as the 1997 remake it has the advantage of retaining some of Dickens more comical characters and leaving the comedy in the series along with the tragedy. The 1997 mini-series was dark and bleak with very few light moments, quite unlike the book and this earlier version. My only comment would be on the casting of John Mcenery to play John Rokesmith. The actor was far to old to play a 28 year old man and when he stands next to Jane Seymour as Bella he looks like her father.
lesley Dunlop also makes for a more realistic Lizzie than Keeley Hawes in the 97 version. She sounds like a child of the river rather than keeley Hawes who sounds like she has just left a finishing school

Although some of the acting may not be very good this is the only version I have ever seen which IS the book. I have seen 6 different productions, of what is, Yorkshire greatest novel but this 1978 adaptation includes the whole book which is why it is 5 x 1 hour episodes. All the film version, including the 1920 Milton Rosmer version only ever cover part of the book - just two episodes of this version.

I wonder if the other people who have reviewed this production have ever read the book. If not they should.

Well done the BBC for using all Brontes words. The book deserves to be told as whole...even the " boring" bits.

DVD : The Sherlock Holmes Catalogue - The Hound Of The Baskervilles [1988]
While budgetry problems due to an overspend on the Return story Silver Blaze make this look a bit cheap in places (notably Watson and Baskerville pursuing the figure on the moor), this is an excellent and faithfull retelling of the original story for the screen. Brett is at his height as the sleuth, and this film really does give Watson the chance to stretch his legs and for Edward Hardwicke to expand his role as the capable actor he is. Solid performances all the way round for the guest stars, and despite some scenes short on budget, the whole thing looks fantastic.

The Hound itself when seen could be said to be slightly less than chilling, but is the superior on eof all the productions I have seen, and the sound and reaction of ... Read More:

Two marvellous Morse episodes, notable in particular for the strength of the supporting performances.

"The Sins Of The Fathers" sees John Thaw rattling sabres with a very superior, matriarchal Isabel Dean, as he attempts to unmask the murderer of her son, general manager of, of all things, a real ale brewery! Lionel Jefferies also puts in a striking performance as Charles Radford, head of the Radford brewing dynasty. Not for the first time, Sergeant Lewis provides the seemingly innocent clue which leads to the episode's satisfying and surprising denouement.

"Driven To Distraction" is a personal favourite, one of a number of superior episodes directed by Anthony Minghella. John Thaw delivers a great performance, showing the human ... Read More:

What there is on this dvd is great. But two of the best of the original plays are missing. The Shades of Darkness series was made by ITV in 1983 and shown 1983/84. The two missing plays are Agatha Christie's The last seance, and Seaton's Aunt. Do not buy it thinking you are going to get them as they are not included. who knows why a three quarters of a series has been released ? But it thoroughly spoils it.

First shown during the late 1980s, these two classic Morse episodes are more than a welcome addition to the DVD catalogue despite the fact that they are often repeated on television.

Of the two episodes shown here, both are very good, although Service Of All The Dead is the slightly better one. The body of a church warden has been found with a knife in his chest in a quiet country church. As the mystery unfolds, there are four more other deaths before Morse finally solves the mystery. There is a sub plot with Morse, a life long bachelor being drawn to the mysterious Ruth (Angela Morant, who is very good, by the way) who may or may not be an accessory to the murders. The ending is quite surprising which what makes the Morse series so riverting. ... Read More:
