I wanted to see this, mainly because I quite like Steve Carell. Not sure what to expect, I rented it rather than buy.

It is, quite simply, one of these easy-to-watch movies. No violence, nothing to worry younger viewers, just a great storyline with some great characters. The three kids are brilliant, in particular Lilly (Marlene Lawston).

Carell takes a break from form in his portrayal of the widower Dan Burns. He is funny without being silly. The family around him, whilst generally in the background, are a fine ensemble to complement the main actors.

The set - the family retreat in Rhode Island - is beautiful. It comes across as being very homely and welcoming.

There are some especially ... Read More:

This film was ok i thought. I certainly wouldnt have given it five stars anyways. i just thought there wasnt really much to it. its basically just about a girl who tries to plan a family thanksgiving by asking her neighbours to help..and thats it!!
fair enough there might be a few hidden meanings and conflicted family relationships etc, but nothing much really happens. i also found the setting/environment to be a bit dark and miserable, which is probably what they were trying to portray, but just didnt like it. oh well..rent it and watch it with the misses, but not one for the lads.

Main criticism: the dialogue is stilted and not (and by not... I mean NEVER) found in real life. And while so much time was spent exploring the awkwardness of intimacy, they managed to create a family dynamic that's simply not found in the real world. I mean, really? Family talent contests and tag football and competitive crossword solving?? It's a film that begs to be taken seriously while telling us an impossible to believe story.

That said, it wasn't all bad. It definitely had its moments... some touching, some funny, mostly bittersweet. I think for some it'll strike a chord, while others will choke on the sentimentality of it all.
