I'm a bit of die hard WH fan and have seen all the versions. So if you loved the romantic Laurence Olivier version of WH then don't bother watching this. If you thought Laurence simply WAS heathcliff then im afraid you have never really read the book. Quite simply put, Ralph Fiennes is Emily Bronte's Heathcliff. Heathcliff isnt meant to be a mills and boon hollywood hero, he has been twisted and shaped by forces in his life into this cruel shadow of a man. Heathcliff is all about passion and revenge. When this was shown on TV I watched it 3 times within 2 weeks. Above all, it shows how there are 2 sides to this (and to most) situation. It is true to say that whether someone is a terrorist or a freedom fighter is a matter of opinion. clearly the drama does not in anyway justify, or even attempt to justify violence. However, it explores the issues involved with such brave honesty that it does reveal how people can be drawn into violent behaviour, even when their starting position is one of good, ethical and moral motivation. In real life we need to stop demonising groups of people. To demonise people makes them separate from us. And we will never make a peaceful world by causing factions. One of the most outstanding BBC single dramas. Perhaps it shares the blame a little too evenly, but you cannot have everything. Why is it that the BBC's outstanding dramas are never published in the UK. I think also of "Foreign Field" (USA only). The BBC seems to make a habit of only publishing its rubbish lately and ignoring its gems.

One of the most outstanding BBC single dramas. Perhaps it shares the blame a little too evenly, but you cannot have everything. Why is it that the BBC's outstanding dramas are never published in the UK. I think also of "Foreign Field" (USA only). The BBC seems to make a habit of only publishing its rubbish lately and ignoring its gems.

When mom is sent off to jail for murdering her boyfriend, Astrid finds herself carted through a string of care homes and foster families. Lohman is excellent in this one, always convincing as she goes on her strange journey from Pfeiffer to religious nut Star (Robin Wright Penn) to fragile and needy Claire (Rene Zellweger). It's a great part for a young actress to play (she's in almost every scene), and she does it very well despite being surrounded by an intimidating group of more experienced actresses playing her various mother figures.
