The film is good. I'm not going to review it here as there are loads of reviews for the film elsewhere. All I will say is that as a long time fan of the books - the film is not as good as the books, especially when they introduce stupid sub plots (suicide) that are not in the books. That aside, it is a good exciting film in of itself.

The Blu Ray transfer is adequate rather than superb. Quite a lot of grain in the picture in a few scenes, though this is the way the film was shot in darkness a lot of the time, rather than the blu ray transfer itself. However it is certainly a step up from the DVD which I own (I rented it on Blu Ray), some scenes are really quite breathtaking. Worth getting if you don't have it on DVD already.

I only just caught up with this film on TV in 2008, and I LOVED it. There are not many films that can keep you gripped for two and a half hours with not a second of boredom (think Zhivago, the Godfather films and Lawrence), but this has to be added to the list. How on earth did this not get best picture instead of the cliched and awful Mystic River? I will certainly be buying the most comprehensive DVD version I can find so that I can rewatch it many times. And by the way, I'm a 45-year-old woman and I watched it on my own, dog tired, at midnight - and it was over far too soon. Great central performance from Russell Crowe, who actually looks tough enough for the job, unlike most Hollywood wimps.

Picnic at Hanging Rock is one of those films that should have been left alone, but unfortunately Peter Weir's considerably shorter director's cut does the film no favours. The additions are minor - a redundant scene of a reporter photographing the school and a very brief but much better introduction to the scene where Albert (Wolf Creek's John Jarrett) tells Michael (Dominic Guard) his dream about his sister - but the deletions in the last third are fairly substantial and surprisingly damaging - most notably the entire section of Irma thanking Albert for finding her on the Rock, Michael's growing relationship with Irma, the church service, Albert and Michael talking at night, and Mrs Appleyard removing Sarah's belongings. Sadly, while it may make ... Read More:

This amusing romantic comedy stars the beautiful and talented Audie MacDowell who plays Bronte, a botanist and gardner, and the charming teddy-bear like Gerard Depardieu, who is a music composer but moonlights as a waiter until he hits the big time. Each with their own agenda, agree to a marriage of convenience and break the law. Bronte's purpose is to have enough money to continue her projects of creating gardens in the inner city for the disadvantaged. George's purpose is to obtain the coveted green card, since he arrived only on a visitor's visa. The unexpected twists and turns in this creative comedy provide great entertainment, making it a "must see" film ...

I read recently that this is Harrison Ford's favourite movies out of those he has made. It's not difficult to see why. It is certainly a departure for him. Although he is the leading charcater in it he is far from his heroic self. In the film he is a "serious" character whose manic obsession with creating his perfect world endangers both himself and more importantly his young family. In a classic "over-reacher" narrative, Allie Fox (Ford) pushes beyond the accepted level for a married man whose priorities ought to be his family. The results are predictably disastrous. At once, Fox is both hero and villain, funny and scary, likeable and loathable, driven and yet misguided. I also read that the film was first offered to Jack Nicholson who declined yet he would have ... Read More:

Inventive thriller which chooses a great setting and character type to give a much needed shot of originality to a crammed genre. Ford is a great choice to play the hard cop with a soft heart and McGillis is perfection as her character. There's chemistry there too. Doesn't try to be too spectacular but instead remembers the quiet dignity of its hosts, and makes great use of this. Interweaved a good little thriller around them, and Ford's compassion for his new friends sets the seal on a class thriller.
