I have just finished watching this set. I had seen some early episodes originally but watched all again. It is almost a bit "Lost on Mars" as the early series now do seem dated or rather perfectly portraying that time - the early 1990s. I found myself watching the clothes of DCI Tennison and of course the ageing of her in her character with all the trials and tribulations faced by a woman in the police force and in her personal life. She is a demanding , admirable yet imperfect character and it is heart wrenching to see the last episode when retirement beckons. Absolutely fantastic performance by Helen Mirren and of course the rest who make their characters just so believable!

I though this film was excellent. I was concerned before the screening about the quantity and quality of the science but they did a good job. There are numerous wonderful scenes of Einstein explaining bits of his work to his sons so children watching will also understand. They gave Eddington one of Einstein's famous demonstrations to use in explaining it to his sister and his friend.

You see how the work of both men was influenced by their families and their beliefs. Both stood up for what they thought was right when their countries were at war. The film showed the difficulties presented to each by the internal emotional conflict due to the war and the deaths it caused. Also both faced conflict with colleagues because of their pacifist ... It's fair enough that a biopic of Stephen Hawking might choose to vastly simplify the scientific research with which he was involved, but this one's also simplified his life events as well by the looks of it. Either that or the early life of Mr Hawking was actually filled with every movie cliché in the book. Pretty much every narrative point is delivered by a scene that you're sure you've seen in another film: the scene where trains spark a scientific revelation, or the scene were someone puts a Mozart record on and talks about how Mozart was a genius, later followed by a scene where something brilliant is described as 'Mozart', to name but two.

There was a nice device whereby Hawkings' story was interjected by scenes of two American scientists ... Read More:

I cannot believe that no one has noticed this item yet. I'm a big Xena fan, and although I already had this one on video, I just had to have it on DVD. Great picture quality, great substitute for the video's that I've watched too many times (*grin*). My favourites are "Destiny" (I love Xena the Conquerer) and "A day in the life". A must have just to watch these episodes over and over again. I hope they release the rest of the series soon!
