It's quite possible to enjoy this 39 Steps, but it helps to see it fresh, without any recent memory of the 1935 Hitchcock version. That one is a classic of suspense, charm, testy romance, and surprises, abetted by two fine performances from Robert Donat and Madeleine Carroll. This 1959 Kenneth More vehicle maintains more-or-less the same plot line and contains some very good piece parts. While it doesn't add up to being in the same league with its elder sibling, it's good enough for a pleasant hour-and-a-half entertainment.

When a nanny Richard Hannay (More) had met accidently earlier in the day is murdered in his rooms after telling him there is an international plot involving ballistic missiles, he realizes he will be blamed ... Read More:

I misread the blurb on this film, thinking it was an alfred hitchcock film where as it's actually an Alfred Hitchcock style film. Still a good film.
A typical murder mystery, the victim is a nasty piece of work and the murderer is easy to pick out and Trevor Howard is the charming knight who saves the persecuted Damsel in Distress. A fun film not to be taken to seriously
It is a little a confusing if you don't pay attention and like all old movies the dialogue is quiet and the music come up loud.

There is no other word to describe it. I am talking about both the unbelievebly bargain price and the magnificence of the films.
To get it out of the way, 'Tale of Two Cities' is only very good. It is not one of the best Dickens stories (but it is still Dickens), and it is not directed by David Lean, however Dirk Bogarde still does extremely well and it is enjoyable.

Right, now we come to the masterpieces: these are certainly two of the greatest top 100 movies ever made, in anyone's list, in mine both are top 20. As far as I am concerned, if you start off with a great story then you will have a good film. What these two films add is acting so brilliant that it could persuade you to alter your sexuality if it so desired, and direction ... Read More:

Great British adaptation of this wonderful story based on the Charles Dickens novel of the same name.

Dirk Bogarde stars as the wonderful (and ever so dashing!) Sidney Carton who despite his drunkenness and apparent 'worthless' existence becomes one of the most charming and heroic characters in English novels! (Bogarde was excellent at playing heroes) The words Sydney Carton utters to the distressed girl by his side who is about to go to the guillotine: 'keep your eyes on me - and mind nothing else' are some of the most beautiful to hear at such a time, and live long in the mind after the film has ended...

One of the most outstanding performances in this movie is that of Rosalie Crutchley as 'Madame DeFarge' - a great ... Read More:

Above Us The Waves starrs John Mills who is always super as a great Britsh hero and this is how this film wins! Showing the skills of a small group of volunteers who manned the midget submarines on a"one way" mission to destroy the Tirpitz.

What makes the film great is that it is true!

I have just received a reply to my email from warners UK & they have confirmed to me that there will be no more Waltons seasons past season 4.
So you will have to buy it from the US (Region 1) or perhaps from amazon.de (Region 2). The only things against the german choice is the packaging & the cost, the dvd's are in English/german with English/German subtitles. The US version with English packaging would look nicer, & works out a bit cheaper but I'm waiting to find out if there are english subtitles (not just closed captions).

One of the reasons I love this movie is the fact that my favourite actor Kenneth More is in it and I have liked the movie since I was young. But it is also one of the funniest movies that this country has produced and one of many great 1950 comedies alongside "Genevieve", "Carry on Sergeant" and others. Like some of these other films (More's "Geniveve" amongst them) it shows a Britain confined to celluoid. Perhaps a gentler Britain to the one we know today. Doctor in the House however is pure fun and with Donald Sinden and James Robertston Justice (delightful as ever) it is extra fun.

DVD : The Wind Cannot Read [1958]

A big British picture, and one of the greatest and saddest love stories captured on film starring Dirk Bogarde and Yoko Tani (who incredibly were to die within only weeks of each other in 1999)

This is a very rare and hard to find title on both VHS and DVD - a beautiful story set against the scenic backdrop of India. This movie will appeal to both romance lovers and lovers of war films alike, as untypical of this genre; this film includes some action for the guys!

Dirk Bogarde is at his most handsome here, and plays one's ideal charming dream of a man perfectly, for any young girl wishing to experience love for the very first time. When I first saw this, I just longed for an affair, and to fall in love with a man just ... Read More:
