The Tall Men has a great opening half hour, but once the snow clears it's pedestrian and overlong all the way despite the combined star power of Clark Gable, Robert Ryan and Jane Russell. The DeLuxe color is problematic throughout - the early scenes and studio footage look wonderful, but out in the wide-open country it tends to make everything on the cattle trail look bleached out and lifeless, the early CinemaScope lenses probably exacerbating the limitations of the system. Still, there's some great dialog and Ryan gets to deliver the definitive description of his co-star - "There goes the only man I ever respected. He's what every boy thinks he's going to be when he grows up and wishes he had been when he's an old man."

"The Enforcer" was directed by Bretaigne Windust (and Raoul Walsh, uncredited) in 1951 and starred Humphrey Bogart in the lead role as a District Attorney attempting to send a crime organization boss to the chair. Its loosely based on an organization, dubbed Murder Inc. by the press, who in the 1930's and 40's performed contract killings for the mob in the New York area. It is believed that they performed hundreds of such 'contracts'. "The Enforcer" is a gritty crime film with strong elements of film noir in many scenes which follows the investigation through a series of flashback sequences which is similar to Citizen Kane (Welles, 1941) and The Killers (Siodmak, 1946). While the direction is a bit rough around the edges, relying on some docu ... Read More:

DVD : Captain Horatio Hornblower [1951] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
Set at the time of the Napolionic wars, HMS Lydia, a frigate of the British Navy, is sent on a secret mission to the Americas. She fights a ship twice her size and is very badly outgunned. Does she survive to fight another day? Tremendous cast including many very well known British actors. This film has the added advantage of Technicolour. Offering not only tender romance but vivid action and adventure which keeps you glued to the film to the very last minute. Great battle scenes which are thoroughly realistic. An outstanding classic, not to be missed. Partly filmed in Portsmouth Royal Navy base and Mermaid Street Rye East Sussex.

This is typical of the American film type that insists that they always win ..everywhere... even when they weren't there.

The acting is the sort of "gung ho" trash we have to expect, with little showing of the true talent that director and star actually had. There are times during the movie you just want to cringe at the failure to come to grips with the truth of war.

Perhaps the thought that might come to the mind of any 14th Army man watching this film is that if the GI troops were as good as shown then things should have gone differently in Korea, Vietnam, Lebanon, Somalia, Iraq and Afganistan.

DVD : Gentleman Jim [1942] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
Gentleman Jim is another case of print the legend, with Errol Flynn playing the legendary boxer as a brash but charismatic social climber in a rollicking entertainment that barely stops for breath. It's as pointless looking for historical accuracy here as it is in Flynn's The Charge of the Light Brigade - this is sheer hokum with all the stops pulled out, filmed on a surprisingly lavish scale and given a real sense of energy by Raoul Walsh's vivid direction. Flynn is still at the height of his powers (you'd never guess he suffered a mild heart attack during the production), with Alexis Smith a beautiful romantic sparring partner and perpetual sidekick Alan Hale along for good measure, this time as Flynn's father (Jack Carson takes sidekick duties ...
