I had seen the film when it first debuted back in 1990, and enjoyed it quite a bit, but looking back today, it's hard for me to divorce myself from a certain nostalgia for the look, sound and feel of the urban scene of 1990, when I was as deep into the music as I would ever be. Although this movie doesn't really feature artists on the cutting edge of hip hop of the day, and Kid N Play would come to be known more for their appearance in the House Party movies than anything they ever did as recording artists, there is still a beauty in the way the dialogue is presented and in the fashion of the young African-American teenagers that keeps it interesting for those that embrace such things.

I enjoyed this undemanding middle of the road comedy. I also liked the much reviled Whole Nine/Ten Yards.

It's well enough made and the cast is likeable. I think a lot of the stuff that annoyed other people didn't bother me. Also it's strange to see one of the Soprano cast members playing an idiot.

I'm not saying it's good. I'm just saying that although it's obviously not technically good, my own inner critic really enjoyed it and I plan to watch it many more times in the future. I must admit I'm talking from the point of view of someone who likes the Police Academy movies and 80's comedies like The Couch Trip.

DVD : "Ladies Man, The (Sell Through)"
This film is absolutely superb. Obvious, yet highly intelligent, The Ladies Man stumbles from hilarious situation to the next with sex (or 'thex' as he'd say it) a constant factor. His stupidity on his radio show and his relentless pursuit of his 'thweet thing' make for non-stop laughter. The one downside is Lee Evans. I can't believe that I had never heard of this film and am so glad that I came across it during a hands-and-knees search of the video shop. If you see this, you'll love it.
