DVD : Superman Movies Collection [4-Discs]
Firstly I must say that although I found the Superman films were always great to watch when I was a kid, I have personally gotten a bit bored with the franchise now. However I still cherish the first few films for what they were.

I bought this boxset just over a year ago because I thought that a) it would not only give me the first two films but the third and fourth ones as well and b) I mistook the Christopher Reeve Collection for this one so then I thought it would give me the deleted scenes of Supes 4 that had been locked away in the vaults of Warner Bros for that long time. Sadly I was wrong and ended up with the finished product and theatrical trailer for it only. However I was glad at the time to get Supes 3 for myself where ... Read More:

I don't understand why this film gets unfavourable reviews on Amazon. I didn't like it when I first saw it on TV in the seventies (I missed it at the cinema being under-age) but it has become one of my favourite films since. It has the greatest of John Barry's great film scores, superb black and white photography, Rita Tushingham at her best, wonderful shots of mod London, and it is very wittily filmed. It is based on a theatre play which has transferred to the screen perfectly and it is inspired by the French New Wave. It is witty and trendy 60s mod art, and so it must be good.

Worth watching for Zero Mostel alone. Great gags as usual from Phil Silvers and Jack Gilford too. One song a bit corny but still very good film. Don't be put off by the Micheal Crawford, he doesn't play a Frank Spencer - apart from the stunts.

This is not a bad movie - considering that similar scenarios have been done over and over - only the scene was set differently here.

If you can stick with this (it can seem a little overlong at times) it is well worth seeing Roy Kinnear playing an exceptionally good role as 'Social Director Curtain'. Some touching moments with one of the lady passengers aboard The Britannic. There's none of what you might expect in this - no real panic and no overly sentimental scenes of 'goodbye' or deep-seated confessions - just ordinary people on board quite 'stunned' really, and so from that perspective, this is pretty unique.

Not quite sure why this movie has two titles - 'Juggernaut' by far being the best and original, and the one I prefer. ... Read More:

Glad this film has finally arrived on DVD. Malcolm McDowell is excellent as Harry Flashman and the rest of the cast is star-studded. Bob Hoskins, Alastair Sim and David Jason have small roles but Alan Bates and Oliver Reed have larger parts to play in a conspiracy plot.

Includes the classic line from McDowell: 'Never hit a man when he's down - he may get up!'

I remember seeing this in a cinema during a wet holiday in Wales when it was on general release. My mother cried her eyes out at the end and my brother and I weren't far behind. Words like beautiful, poignant and sensitive get used a lot in movie reviews but they all apply to this, by far the best treatment of the Robin Hood legend ever on film. Because Lester shows us a plausible Robin, as he might actually have been, but allows for some decent, if arthritic, heroics too - it's not a 'debunking' sort of movie. Someone else here has described the story as 'silly', which is banal and misses the point that whilst there's plenty of action this is not an action movie requiring a complex plot and a villain who dies three times. It's a character study about ageing, change and ... Read More:

Evidently this is supposed to be some sort of black comedy. Unless you like keystone cops, there is not much comedy; it is more of a surrealistic missing of the mark.

Michael Crawford "A funny thing happened on the way to the Forum" (1966), is supposed to be some sort of inept WWII officer. This film is full of colorful characters (painted red, blue and whatever).

There are a lot of noisy overlapping claptrap and gobbledygook statements. It is unique enough not to be anything. The only thing missing are the Muppets.

You would be much better off watching "What Did You Do in the War, Daddy?" (1966) It has a moral and redeeming social value.

Leave this featureless disc on the shelf. Buy the 2006 3 disc DVD set which features the restored Richard Donner cut, 2 commentaries and a 1980's TV documentary. It's great stuff and what this classic (and controversial) movie totally deserves.

Other reviewers have already covered most I would wnat to say but quite simply this film is a laugh from start to finish. Subtle humour mixed with slapstick and farce; over acting from Googie the diva with no voice but always looking for her Mr Big "movie producer" (watch out for a final llaugh on that topic!) A host of fine actors keep the action going from start to finish with innuendo and silent comedy thrown in for good measure.

I agree....it should be out on DVD by now !!
