I first saw this film when I was a kid (it scared the hell out of me then), and I have returned to it several times over the years, each time thinking it better than the time before. Seeing that this nice DVD edition was available, I didn't hesitate. It's a beautifully restored presentation of the film, and the extras cover much interesting ground.

The film itself has a good script based on a brilliant idea, but it's the acting that will get to you, especially Bette Davis' fearless, endlessly varied performance as the grotesque, deteriorating title character. There is no trace of vanity in her looks or acting, and she seizes an already great part with a gusto that makes it A) impossible to picture anyone else in the role, and B) ... Read More:

When Nat Cole's smooth, melancholy delivery sends "Rather Have the Blues Than What I've Got" out of Mike Hammer's car radio late one night, we know nothing good is going to happen. Hammer has just picked up a desperate young woman named Christina who had been running down an isolated California two-lane rode.

"The room is dark and gloomy, you don't know what you're doing to me
The way it has got me caught, I'd rather have the blues than what I've got."

The lyrics might not be good, but Cloris Leachman's frightened urgency as Christina sets the movie on the fast track. It's not long before Hammer's car is forced off the road, he's beaten senseless, and wakes up on a bed listening to shrieks of pain as Christina, ... Read More:

This film features a special mission team in the thick of World War 2 before D-Day parachuted behind Nazi lines for a special destruction mission. The operation is fiction but there are similar covert missions during the war.The main strategy of the team is to deceive, shock and rapidly destroy the enemy. Similar tactics were also used by Nazis during the war in the European theatre. Nazi soldiers disguised as American soldiers tried to disrupt the logistics and supply lines. The film is shot with a wide range of stars sucj as Lee Marvin, Telly Salavas, John Cassevetes, Charles Bronson, Ernest Borgnine, Donald Sutherland et al. This film was, apparently, originally meant to be the sequel to 'Baby Jane' and bears strong resemblances to it.Bette Davis plays a tortured old woman haunted by a tragic and violent past, as she does in 'Baby', and she is also looked after by a seemingly saner, kinder relative Miriam,( played by Olivia de Havilland), who turns up at Charlotte's request, when her house is threatened with demolition to accomodate a motorway. Events soon take a sinister turn.Has Charlotte descended further into madness, or is her cousin, aided by old philanderer Drew(Joseph Cotten) up to something? You'll have to watch this to find out, but suffice it to say that this is a fine film, a worthy successor to 'Baby Jane': there are some excellent, creepily effective scenes, and some great performances:Davis, ... I bought this film for my collection on the strength of the other reviews. Bad mistake. The quality of the transfer is poor and getting to the end of the movie was a challenge. NOT one for the collection imho.

This is a great film about men in adversity - and one of James Stewart's finest roles. The flying is very short, and mostly done before the opening credits (a very 60's device, the particular style of which dates the film). Once the plane is down and the cast is marrooned in the desert, traditional relationships break down as British army officer Peter Finch is undermined by his sergeant (Ronnie Frazer in his best ever role). Also the efficient and technocratic Hardy Kruger and guilt-ridden 'seat of your pants' flyer James Stewart clash as Richard Attenborough acts as a desparate referee. Meanwhile Ian Bannen undermines everybody.
It is hard to fault the acting, the filming or the script. The score is a bit 'Budget Lawrence of Arabia', but this shouldn't put you off.
The tragedy of this ... Read More:

excellent portrayal of how hard times where in the american depression, and how it produced very hard men who would stop at nothing to get by. a must for any serious film collector.

I first saw this film in the cinema when I was a boy of 6. Despite my youth and the long running time I was mesmerised by the story and the acting. Time seemed to stand still and the final scene was the climax of the film. The joy of those men was contagious. I remembered the film fondly. The beauty of such a film is that it could just as well have been done as a play on the stage. The whole film pivots around James Stewart and Hardy Kruger.
Do see the remake just to appreciate what a masterpiece this original is.

I have recently watched this film after seeing it years ago.

I had forgotten how tough the film was but it was tempered by black humour and Burt Reynolds Southern good ole boy persona that he played to a tee in most of his films.

This is a classic individualist film from the second golden age of Holloywood. Sure, it wasn't to be taken literaly but it brought home the message that there are some things that have to be stood up for even if it costs dearly.

As mentioned Reynolds is great but also Jim Hampston, Richard Kiel and Robert Teisser provide great support.

All in all, a great sports film mixed with the triumph of the human spirit against extreme adversity.

This movie stands up to one of Burt Reynold's best performances involving a crucial football game where all the inmates are heroes and all the guards are the villains.

Paul Crew (Reynolds) is a retired pro football player. He spends his time with wealthy women who shower all the amenities he may want in post-season life. When he refuses to please his current girlfriend, he doesn't live up to her giggolo standards, so she isn't exactly accomodating when he wants to "borrow" her luxury sports car. She sends the police, for which he sends on a chase, while guzzling a drink in the driver's seat. Once apprehended, he must enter prison, for, above all things, assaulting two officers and resisting arrest. There, he meets the warden (Albert) who gives him an offer he can't refuse: To escape beatings and other maltreatment, ... Read More:
