I've seen this movie numerous times, and definitely think it's worth commenting on. It was originally released in 1993 (directed by Robert De Niro - his directorial debut), and having seen it on VHS quite a few years back, I felt that I had to have a copy on DVD. The story centres around a young boy growing up in the Bronx, who falls under the influence of Sonny (Chazz Palminteri), the neighbourhood wiseguy, and details the fight by his father (played by Robert De Niro) to prevent his son from falling in to a life of crime. As the story unfolds, Calogero (the boy in question) is subjected to a full range of emotional and physical experiences, ranging from witnessing a murder to falling in love for the first time. Robert DeNiro and Matt Damon were responsible for possibly my biggest disappointment of 2007, The Good Shepherd, which has to be one of the five or six most boring films I have ever seen. When requesting the DVD from a friend for my birthday, I was expecting a complex, dour, all-star conspiracy thriller along the lines of the BBC's classic adaptation of John LeCarre's Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. What I actually got was a film that was so dull the plot washed over me without leaving one mark on my memory. The fantastically talented Mr Robert De Niro directs this film to perfection. It's a great movie. The soundtrack is absolutely OUTSTANDING. I can picture every scene in the movie if I hear the soundtrack. Excellent performances from Robert De Niro, Frank Capra, & Chazz. A very good cast overall. Alot of good messages within the movie and some classic moments. Robert De Niro is not only one of the greatest actors in the world along with Al Pacino, he proved he can direct with this first class directorial debut. Well done. Love this film. I highly recommend.
