Don't get it. Just don't get it. If you have any sense or insight into the world you'll already know all the stuff that this film ponderously pummels into you with dull thudding blows to the head.
If you don't know how the world works then you'll never get past the first 10 minutes before falling asleep or being distracted by trivia (and that is a very, very bad thing according to Uncle Robert) and you won't be reading this.

This film was based on a novel by Steven Pressfield but the real inspiration was from the Hindu Epic The Mahabaharata where there is an interesting conversation that leads to the holiest of Hindu Scriptures known as the Bhagavad Gita. Will Smith as Bagger Vance (pronounced in an Indian way as Bhagawan; another name for Krishna) is brilliant and is ably supported by Matt Damon as R. Junuh (alternatively pronounced as Arjuna). The story shows Smith as a caddy and also spiritual guide to Damon...as in the Bhagavad Gita.
A nice, tender film at the hand of writer/director Robert Redford. Matt Damon is the leading man in this film as a former golfer that brushes up on his talents of the past, whilst Will Smith plays a supporting guardian angel type ... Read More:

I will probably atract some negative votes for this review, but I must speak my mind. I do not regret watching this movie, but I can not agree with the previous reviewers and give it the five stars. And here are the reasons.
First, if somebody asked me what this movie is about, I would be forced to answer: "Well, I am not sure...". If somebody asked me, what is happening in this movie, I would have to say: "Not much". If I was asked, is there any humour in it, well, I would have to say: "Not really". To the question "Are the dialogs deep and intelligent?" the answer would have to be "No, and it is a pity, because you would expect better from Robert Redford". "Does the ending make some sense?" "Not much - it is kind of sudden and seems like a victim of bad editing ... Read More:

Rented on the basis of outstanding reviews seen here & elsewhere.
Personally I found the film unsatisfying. The outcome was of course largely predictable, hence there was less tension that I had hoped for. I found the american accents adopted by Fiennes & Scofield irritating & unconvincing. On the other hand I almost felt the need for sub titles in the case of Rob Morrow's character. Overall I just felt an absence of empathy for any of the characters - always a killer blow. The direction of the film felt heavyhanded in the way it was trying to ram it's message home. Just not a film I felt any affection for.

DVD : Ordinary People [1980]
Was moved sufficiently by this film to write a small review. Was especially moved by Timothy Hutton's character - what an intense performance - utterly believable and sometimes painful to watch. Whatever happened to Mr Hutton? I was terrifically moved by Donald Sutherland's early morning monolgue at the dining room table... I defy anyone to watch this film and remain unconcerned by what the outcome may have been.
On the down side, it was a little overdramatic - which ate into the authenticity of the characters and the story. The flashback scenes were a little unbelievable and not particularly well shot. These are the reasons that caused me to give it only 4 stars as opposed to 5. However, only a few small negative points.. not too much to worry about and certainly shouldn't stop ... Read More:
