The Sound Of Music (2 Disc 40th Anniversary Collector's Edition) [1965]
With nearly three hours of snow-capped Swiss mountains, a sprawling family of six children, extravagant parties, picnics and family concerts in Salzburg and buckets of encouragement from Rogers and Hammerstein, it's no wonder that this film is also called THE SOUND OF MONEY. It won FIVE ACADEMY AWARDS and has taken hundreds of millions dollars. It's the surprisingly simple story of Maria(JULIE ANDREWS), a nun who's Governess to the rigidly disciplined children of an Austrian Military Captain(CHRISTOPHER PLUMMER). She so enchants him that he breaks off his engagement to a socialite baroness. In the meantime, Maria, teaches the children to sing and the whole family is ... Read More:

Outstanding. I get bored sometimes with some of the long dance sequences in classic musicals, even in great movies like Singin' in the Rain and the Fred-and-Ginger musicals, but this is one of the few films where the dance is truly a pleasure to watch. The lead actors Natalie Wood and Richard Beymer are not often mentioned much in review but the youthfulness and sincerity of their performances is key to the film's success. Those who produced the film considered many options for these two roles and as with everything else, they got it right.

Having read the star spangled reviews on "The Haunting" I excitedly entered in my card details and eagerly awaited it's arrival through my letterbox, sat down with a bottle of wine and an Indian and pressed Play.
Oh dear. Is everyone reviewing the same film here?! A lovely sinister looking manor house for the setting (filmed on location in Stratford-Upon-Avon)-looks promising, and some nice Borehamwood room sets... and lots of talking...and more talking...um...oh, sorry I nearly nodded off again...!
Over 100 minutes of film is devoted almost entirely to American actress Julie Harris' character arguing and ranting over her own insecurities to the other guests in the house. There is far too much dialogue and for me personally is completely ... Read More:

I had to return my borrowed 'original' VHS tape and I didn't want the DVD (high up in a recent survey of most wanted gadgets: a button on a DVD remote labeled "Just play the goddam film"). When I received the tape I was disappointed to see "DIGITALLY MASTERED FOR SUPERIOR SOUND AND PICTURE QUALITY". Why do they lie like this? Luckily the sound has survived but the picture is awful compared to the very old, much played borrowed tape. The picture has a brownish tinge and soft focus all the way through.
The reason the tape is digitally 'mastered' is presumably the same as with digitally mastered LP's; so as not to show up the limitations of the new CD's and DVD's. However I can remember enough of the borrowed tape to continue to enjoy this wonderful film.

Klaatu: This comes from our own planet, but if you threaten to extend your violence, this Earth of yours will be reduced to a burned-out cinder. Your choice is simple: join us and live in peace, or pursue your present course and face obliteration. We shall be waiting for your answer. The decision rests with you."IMDB

'The Day the Earth Stood Still' was one of the first movies in the 1950's to explore space travel and to provide a warning that "the use of violence as a solution to all problems" is an issue we need to face. All these years later we are still on this path and these words have not been taken seriously. This movie is known as the best Science Fiction movie ever written. 56 years later it still stands up. Patricia Neal had no idea this would ... Read More:

The Sound Of Music (1 Disc) [1965] This film is as lovely today as when it was first made and i honestly don't know who couldn't love this beautiful film. 'The Sound Of Music' stars Julie Andrews, Christopher Plummer, Richard Haydn, Peggy Wood and Eleanor Parker, all perfectly cast. Julie Andrews comes across with such sincerity and my favourite actress in the whole film is Peggy Wood, who like Julie Andrews plays the part with sincerity. This is the latest release onto DVD. Lovely vibrant colours, the scenery with the mountains, lakes and Austrian buildings look so beautiful since the restoration and this is the best transfere to date of this wonderful film. I think the film holds a message for us all especially in the song 'Climb Ev'ry Mountain' and the lovely lines in the ... Read More:

James Mason gives two very different impersonations of Rommel, every Brit's favorite Nazi general, in The Desert Fox and The Desert Rats. The former is a solid biopic more concerned with his involvement in the plot to assassinate Hitler than his exploits in Africa, painting him as an honorable man unable to believe just how insane Hitler is until it is too late, while the latter is a standard war movie set against the siege of Tobruk slightly elevated by Robert Wise's direction but which still manages to feel overlong at an hour and a half. Richard Burton and Robert Newton are the top-liners, but Mason turns up for an extended cameo as a dastardly Nazi swine of the "Die, Englander pigdog" comic strip variety.

The only extras are the original trailers for each film.
