Okay this is not a good film. But hell, there is no reason to be so scathing! to not find any trace of enjoyment in this you must be exceptionally hard to please. I've already said an I'll repeat, this is not a good film BUT it is worth a veiwing, if only for the music! If you are unsure then like with anything I reveiw rent it first

My boys (including my husband) are diehard Simpsons fans. In the famous Sideshow Bob episode where he tries to kill Bart, Bart requests that he first sing a refrain from the Gilbert and Sullivan musical HMS Pinafore. My 10 year old began to sing along often enough so that I thought it would be a good idea to buy the soundtrack.
When I came across this DVD version including Hollywood Squares presenter Peter Marshall (a blast from my past) and the legendary British comic Frankie Howard for such a respectable price, the choice was made.
Since the purchase my boys have become much more interested in music and instead of Bob the Bouwer we've moved on to Gilbert and Sullivan satire and even Tchaikovsky.
The production is obviously ... Read More:

This production from the 80's is very typical of the type of production around at that time. It does look somewhat dated now but vocally it is quite thrilling. Carreras sounds pushed but exciting, Ricciarelli is caught just before her decline and shows she was always more suited to this role than the title role she recorded. Marton takes the honours in this production and vocally I think she fares better here than at the Met with Domingo. This is far preferable to some of the shockingly sung recent additions on DVD, but noted at last the return on DVD of the Dimitrova version from Verona. Buy both if possible if you can only have one buy Dimitrova she was unsurpassed in the role at this time.

DVD : The Pirates Of Penzance [1982]
A good film in it's own right, the singers are good and professional, but the acting leaves much to be desired, starting off with a 21 year old Frederick who looks more like he's 35! The maidens are typically played by older women trying to look young and Ruth looks younger than all of them (including Mabel!) unfortunately this is a very visual play, and needs the acting that the UK turned American version had... I originally got this because I had not realised there was more than one version out.. only to find out that the Kevin Kline Angela Lansbury version has been deleted from the UK!!! *cries* Anyone can help me get hold of the best copy out there? please tell me! I canm't get it from America as my TV doesn't support NTSC which would be required...

I have had somewhat mixed feelings about the other two DVDs I've seen from this series of concert performances of all the Tchaikovsky symphonies performed by the Moscow Radio Symphony Orchestra under their longtime conductor, Vladimir Fedoseyev. One of the problems has been the 1991 sound and another has been the somewhat uneven playing of the orchestra. I very much liked the DVD containing the Fourth Symphony, much less so the one with the First. This one contains three much-loved works by Russia's best-loved composer: the Pathetique Symphony, the Serenade for Strings, and the First Piano Concerto with Mikhail Pletnev at the piano. The problem with 1991 sound remains. There is murky detail, particularly with the woodwinds. One can hardly hear the important bits ... Read More:

Vladimir Fedoseyev was the conductor of the Moscow Radio Symphony Orchestra for thirty years or more and if any group knew what he wanted it was they. This DVD is of a live recording of a 1991 concert of that orchestra in the Alte Oper of Frankfurt, part of a series of video recordings of all the Tchaikovsky symphonies plus a number of his other works. This one also contains excerpts from 'Swan Lake' and the seldom-heard Concert Fantasia for Piano and Orchestra, Op. 56, featuring the pianist Mikhail Pletnev.

The Third Symphony is called the 'Polish' for no other reason than it's final movement is marked 'tempo di polacca'; otherwise there is absolutely nothing Polish about it, unlike the 'Little Russian' (Ukrainian) symphony which teems with Ukraine ... Read More:
