The 1985 film (which was broadcast as six episodes of 53 minutes each) was filmed mainly in South Shropshire. Handyman Hall was filmed at Stanage Park, near Heartsease, Powys. Ludlow stood in for the fictitious town of Worford, and Deddington near Banbury became the village of Guildstead Carbonell, where several mock buildings were demolished in the market place for the film. Ludlow's Butter Cross, in the busy and constricted town centre, was used as the courtroom. The Lodge, where Blott lives, was built on land at Blaise Castle Estate near Bristol.

The original broadcast was between 6 February 1985 and 13 March 1985.

I did see the Original Broadcast in 1985 { when I was 32 } and I am in my third viewing of the DVD ... Read More:

You would think that a tv series as well loved as this would be given a fitting dvd release...but this is Britain & we treat tv and film with disdain for no apparent reason, especially British tv and film. The original ad break titles are predictably clumsily omitted, destroying the rhythm of each episode and the 2 La Frenais/Clement commentaries are appalling...La Frenais sounds utterly disinterested and yawns at least 3 times, Clement is only slightly better. We learn next to nothing about the series, nor the 7 actors...it is a woeful effort & both men ought to be ashamed of their lack of enthusiasm.

If it wasn't for the better sound quality (the pic is only marginally better than VHS) & ease of use dvd affords, I'd ... Read More:

This is a light pleasant series - rainy afternoon by the fire with a cup of tea and slice of homemade cake stuff - it is gentle and pleasant and Patricia Rutledge is as always great.
She is an OAP who has refused to fall into the "norm" and becomes a private eye.
One cannot use the words gripping or brilliant but if one accepts it for what is it well then it is most enjoyable, I love them and it is refreshing to sit down and watch series such as this which tells a story without the use of grapic violence and bad language. To be enjoyed.

At the time of writing this, sadly, this classic and popular comedy drama from the 80's is unavailable on DVD. The dramatisation closely follows Tom Sharpe's excellent book. Ignore the fact that local authority planning doesn't work according to he story, as the plot thickens with every scene, and it's so very very amusing. David Suchet excels as Blott, Geraldine James glows as Lady Maud and George Cole makes an adequate Sir Giles and it's amusing to see Julia McKenzie in a catsuit.

It comes as a two part video set, each episode being around 3 hours long. Watch and enjoy the raunchy fun.

DVD : Minder - Series 8 - Parts 1 To 4 [1979]
Minder series 8 hass been cleverly re-invented by Leon Griffiths. You have George Cole being himself while showing his nephew Ray Daley (Gary Webster) the 'tricks of the trade'. It is humerous and because Ray is family, George Cole tries too be a caring uncle. Ray Daley is a good minder getting uncle Arthur out of trouble while showing the audience that hitting people is not always the answer (Terry McCann always liked a good punch-up). Dave returns as the barman of Winchester Club and there are 2 new policeman on Arthurs case. Definetly one to buy.
